Prince Harry is grateful to have Duchess Meghan by his side.

In a new interview with People, the Duke of Sussex spoke about the importance the Invictus Games – the international sporting competition for wounded veterans he founded in 2014 – has in his relationship with the Duchess. (The two made their first public outing as a couple during the 2017 Toronto Games.)

“Nowhere can you feel more embraced and supported than with the Invictus family,” Harry told the outlet. The Toronto Games were our first official public appearance. We were together at the time so there was a lot to process, but luckily we were with the perfect community to do it.”

Reflecting on the trajectory of their relationship, he added: “Now, five years later, we are here in The Hague at the fifth Invictus Games, as parents of two children, and living in the USA. I’ve always wanted to share these incredible moments with someone special, and having Meg by my side means everything to me.”

The king also spoke of taking life’s “gifts and challenges” as “lessons” that appear to portend him and his wife’s landmark exit from royal life in 2020.

“Life is full of extraordinary gifts and challenges, many of which can be viewed as lessons,” he said. “Over time, I’ve learned that the way we mentally address and respond to the ups and downs — those gifts and challenges — helps define our own outcome.”

Since arriving at this year’s Invictus Games last Friday, the Duke and Duchess have been busy cheering on the athletes, attending receptions and meeting with teams from around the world. The duo even spent Easter with the competitors.

Before the competition, Harry thanked the veterans and their families for attending the event.

“For the men, women, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who have served and who have been wounded, injured or sick, there is nothing quite like seeing them rediscover their ability to do what they set out to do have,” he said in a speech. “And there’s nothing quite like seeing you, with families watching proudly from the stands. So I want to thank you all – family and friends. We couldn’t do this without you. And in many cases, we wouldn’t be here without you.”
