Brazilians living abroad have the right to vote for the office of President of the Republic. To this end, polling stations were set up in 181 foreign cities. Until 2 p.m. this Sunday (2) at BrasÃlia time, voting for the first round of Elections 2022 had already closed in 69 countriesannounced the TSE (Supreme Electoral Court).
According to the electoral court more than 697,000 voters can vote abroadan increase of 39.21% compared to the 2018 general election. Apart from the high turnout, nothing unusual has been noted so far.
There are still long lines in Porto and Lisbon, Portugal, as well as in Dublin, Ireland. In these and other locations in Europe, it is possible that the voting time will be extended to accommodate everyone waiting in line. In addition, 57 ballot boxes were defective and had to be replaced, but in some cases there were replacements for paper voting.
The organization of elections abroad, such as sending ballot boxes and opening polling stations, is the responsibility of the TREDF (Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District). The agency said it has already started receiving the first ballots from other countries. However, the publication of the official results should not begin until 5 p.m.
This year, for the first time, all polling stations in Brazil will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasilia time. Locations with a different time zone are therefore adjusted to the local time.
However, the rule does not apply to voters at polling stations abroad, where polling stations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.
