Presidential election in Montenegro news

A new president will be elected in Montenegro today. In the first round of voting, starter Milo Djukanovic will face six opponents. The 61-year-old has been the dominant political figure in Montenegro since the late 1990s. He led the country to independence from Serbia in 2006 and then NATO in 2017. The pro-Western head of state also wants to lead the Balkan state in the EU.

Djukanovic dissolved parliament this week after months of political stalemate and announced snap elections for June.
His opponents accuse Djukanovic and his Democratic Party of corruption and links to organized crime.

The candidate Andrija Mandic, from the pro-Russia Democratic Front, is considered the most important competitor of the head of state, whose position has a mostly representative function. According to the polls, the decision is unlikely to be taken until the second round, on April 2.
