In December 2021, she reflected on the five years that have passed since she was diagnosed with the terminal cancer: “I am fully aware that I should not be alive today to write this” Deborah said.

James said her cancer is no longer being treated and rather than focusing on a cure, the goal at this point is to make sure she isn’t in pain so she can spend more time with her. “Great family”.

She then explained: “Nobody knows how much time I have left, but I can’t walk, I sleep most days and most of the things I took for granted are distant dreams. I know we’re looking for all possibilities. But even with all the innovative cancer treatments in the world, or even if there’s a new magical discovery, my body just can’t go on anymore.”

She also explained that the “Bowelbabe” fund, named after the name she used on her Instagram account, would be set up to fund research into personalized medicine for cancer patients and to support colon cancer awareness campaigns.

James began hosting the You, Me and the Big C podcast in 2018, with the show being praised for its open discussion of cancer. Rachel Bland, another host, died six months after the show started at the age of 40. Two years earlier she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In the same Instagram post Deborah James said: “The goal for me now is to take it one step at a time and be thankful for another sunrise. My whole family is around me and let’s dance together, sunbathe and laugh (I’ll cry!!) at every possible moment!”

Deborah then thanked her online followers for it “Play your part in my journey”before saying goodbye: “No regrets. enjoy life”.
