Costa Rica. In the first 100 days in power of President Rodrigo Chaves, what stands out today is popular support for his government, which 70 percent of Costa Ricans rate as very good or good.

According to a survey by the University of Costa Rica (UCR) Development Observatory Research Center conducted between July 11 and 20 among 518 people, 70 percent approved of Chaves’ work, 21 percent considered it regular and only seven Percent were negative opinion.

The study, part of a documentary-oriented exploration of political events from the recent elections and the 100 days of Chave’s government, shows that 69 percent of respondents believe they have delivered on campaign promises, emphatically for the fight against corruption.

On the other hand, 36 percent of respondents responded that Costa Rica’s president is not delivering on his promise to cut taxes, and 34 percent mentioned the impossibility of reducing the cost of the basic food basket.

The UCR study shows that public perception is favorable (good or very good) across all areas and demographics, with a slight superiority among men and with particular support from the province of Alajuela, which gives Chaves an 83.4 percent approval rating. followed by Cartago (73.6) and Puntarenas (72.4).

When asked about Chaves’ work in relation to the economy, 51 percent have a good opinion, while about his worst decisions, 30 percent said they didn’t say anything, 33 percent didn’t know, and 17.2 percent said that the management of the Covid-19 pandemic is still active.

Regarding the latter, last Wednesday the Tico President suspended the emergency declaration for this disease that has been in effect since March 2020, a fact that some specialists consider unwise as the World Health Organization still does not consider the Covid pandemic to be over. 19

Finally, three out of four respondents said the Chaves government will end its term in 2026 on a good note.

As today is Mother’s Day in Costa Rica, tomorrow the government will hold a grand commemoration of the 100 days in power, which will be held at the capital’s National Cultural Center.
