The Polish Prime Minister has requested a detailed report on this matter. Against the background of the war in Ukraine, the fear of energy sabotage is taken seriously.

The Polish Prime Minister said on Thursday January 19 that he had instructed the secret services to investigate after the rescue of three divers in the Baltic Sea near the oil port of Gdansk (North).

On the night of Sunday January 15th to Monday January 16th the three men sent out a distress signal after their boat broke down. They were rescued by the Polish Coast Guard.

“They could have been very dangerous people”

They introduced themselves as Spaniards looking for amber. According to Polish media, only one of them had identification papers. They were checked by the police and then released. The phone numbers provided soon turned out to be inactive.

“I have ordered a very thorough report on this matter,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters on Thursday after fears were raised about the divers’ real identities. According to local media, they had expensive diving gear and had already left Poland. “They were maybe very dangerous people,” said Mateusz Morawiecki.

He also pointed out that the security of strategic infrastructures such as the LNG terminal in Świnoujście (West) and the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline connecting Poland with Norway will be strengthened. “It is obvious that with the war in Ukraine, the risk of sabotage by Russia has increased significantly, and surveillance of critical infrastructure needs to be strengthened,” Mateusz Morawiecki underscored.
