Peruvians denounce US meddling Get out Yankees

Peruvians demonstrate in front of the US embassy in Lima on January 25, 2023.

The outraged chanted songs to call for their main demands, the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and Washington’s non-interference in Peru’s internal affairs. “Get out of Yankees!” they screamed repeatedly.

One of the participants explained that the purpose of the sit-in was to reject US interference and support for the Boluarte government.

The presence of the protesters, mostly natives and some in their typical dress, caused surprise in the exclusive eastern part of Lima, while a police line covered the facade of the North American embassy.

The US Embassy in Lima was among the first to recognize Boluarte as Peru’s head of state, replacing Pedro Castillo, who was ousted by Congress on December 7 and promptly imprisoned.

Former President Castillo assured in mid-December that the US was behind the police repression, which resulted in the deaths of two demonstrators. Now those deaths number in the dozens.

On the same Wednesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on US Ambassador to Peru Lisa Kenna to stop interfering in the political crisis.
