“People are desperate and afraid!”

Wolfgang Wedan, emergency relief coordinator for Jugend Eine Welt, reports live from Syria.

Vienna (OTS) – “The situation is heartbreaking – misery wherever you look”, reports Wolfgang Wedan on the current situation in Syria. The emergency aid coordinator of the Austrian aid organization Jugend Eine Welt has been traveling for two days through the regions of Syria affected by the strong earthquake. Even though the Styrian is a proven expert in disaster management and has a lot of experience in earthquake relief, he is dismayed by the great suffering of children affected by the earthquake and their families.

It is even more important that help actually reaches people now. To this end, Jugend Eine Welt’s long-standing partners in the region – the Don Bosco Sisters and the Salesians of Don Bosco – work closely with their religious colleagues residing in Lebanon. “This morning, a bus from the Don Bosco Sisters from Lebanon brought many important relief supplies. This includes groceries, warm clothes and shoes,” continues Wedan. He himself is staying with his partners in Aleppo, whose building was not badly damaged by the earthquake.

“The night was very cold, the Don Bosco Sisters have no electricity at the moment. There were many small aftershocks and a larger one with a magnitude of 5.2. It is extremely dangerous here. People are scared and desperate,” Wedan said of the current situation in Aleppo. He is currently in the process of getting an overview so that he can initiate other efficient relief measures.

“Thanks to the generous donors here in Austria, we are able to help the earthquake victims – please help alleviate the great suffering,” appealed Jugend Eine Welt, Managing Director Reinhard Heiserer.
