China Radio International (CRI) The visit of Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on Tuesday constitutes interference in China’s internal affairs and violates the internationally recognized principle of One China, said Fundação Getúlio Vargas’ Brazil Studies CenterChina coordinator ( FGV), Evandro Menezes de Carvalho.

“Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is an external interference in internal affairs that is prohibited under international law,” said Carvalho, who has a PhD in international law and is a professor at the FGV and the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). He pointed out that the Taiwan issue is an internal Chinese issue.

Carvalho criticized the diplomatic style of the United States, which he described as “confrontational” in contrast to China, which relies on dialogue.

“US diplomacy, as we saw with Nancy Pelosi, is confrontational diplomacy, while China tries to avoid direct confrontation as much as possible,” he said.

Carvalho reiterated that the Taiwan issue only affects the Chinese. “This trip to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi violates the agreement between the two countries, an agreement in which the US recognized the existence of only one China, and this breach is worrying,” he commented.

“This visit must be understood in the context of the need for the Democratic Party to boost its popularity for the next US election. At the international level, the US is attempting to construct a logic of international relations within the dichotomy. Democracy versus dictatorship. ‘ Pelosi himself mentioned this recently in Taiwan, which goes back a bit to the Cold War mentality,” he said.

For Carvalho, the Chinese military exercises announced shortly after Pelosi’s visit aim to resolutely uphold China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and thwart external interference and separatist plans for “Taiwan independence”.

“On the Chinese side, diplomacy has already spoken out that there will be a determined response to this visit. The fact is that the Chinese model of responding to these situations is very different from that of Western diplomacy,” he concluded.
