Peace deals challenge Bukele government in El Salvador

Contrary to the opinion of the majority of Salvadorans, President Bukele recently opined on the 31st anniversary of their signing that the peace accords were a sham and a negotiation between two leaders that did not take into account the historical moment the country was alive, according to analysts.

Óscar Santamaría, one of the signatories to the 1992 pact in Mexico City, believes that violating this historic treaty is making the same mistakes again and invited the new generations to learn about the peace process.

Although there is much disagreement about the content of these commitments, the Historical Memory Commission called on the government to withdraw them and remain true to its principles, grant access to military archives and pass a Victims’ Justice and Reparations Act that meets their needs resumes .

These, among other demands, have become specific in recent days, as the country’s political forces have not failed to appeal to the authorities to recognize the importance of what has been signed in Mexico, given the country’s current conditions, and the observance and to demand application of the agreements .

In this regard, Vicente Cuchillas, a member of the Historical Memory, urged President Bukele to “return to the path” set out by the peace accords and not to commit the “mistakes of past governments” by not being faithful to the principles of the accords remain and the continued denial of access to military archives.

The activist criticized those trying to make the pact invisible, reiterating that it should not be rejected but demanded and taken into account as a starting point to improve the situation in the country.

On the other hand, Mauricio Ernesto Vargas, one of the signatories of the agreement for the government of the time, appreciated that this agreement, which made it possible to end the massacres of civilians, guerrillas and soldiers, must be preserved, preserved and deepened, making necessary changes in the country.
