The facts happened on the night of December 3-4, 2022 in a town in West Flanders, a Belgian province in the Flemish Region, according to Het Laatste Nieuws, a Belgian newspaper.

The children, aged 5 to 7, were not injured and the intruder was arrested.

That night, the parents were woken up by their daughter’s coughing and discovered the unknown. The children’s father neutralized the person until the police arrived.

The man was drunk and didn’t seem to notice.

Kévin D., originally from France, was arrested by police earlier in the day for drunk driving on the public road. Released just before midnight, he reappeared in the nursery at 5:40 the next morning.

“I searched for a hotel but couldn’t find anything. […]. The door was open and all I wanted to do was sleep from the cold. I didn’t realize I was between two kids,” he confided to the judges.

“I want to believe that he had no bad intentions, but I think it’s a little worse that he didn’t see the toys lying around and the children sleeping in the bed,” added the mother-in-law, who doubts the intruder’s version. The parents asked for a removal measure.

The prosecutor asked for a 6-month prison sentence and a fine of 800 euros (1167 CAD) for trespassing.
