Panama City, 18th January (EFE).- The President of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, this Wednesday sanctioned the Law of the “State Agri-Food Policy (PADE)”, the first in the country with which it seeks to regulate this sector protect the next 25 years.

“The state’s agricultural and food policy also corrects mistakes of the past that cannot be repeated in the future,” said the Panamanian President during his visit to the San Sebastián de Ocú Fair in the central province of Herrera, a rural area of ​​Panama that has a country high presence of ranchers and farmers.

“We cannot favor imports; if they are needed, the grocery chains are there and we can agree on what to buy abroad to supplement national production, but no matter when growers harvest,” he said.

The new law promotes four blocks of structural reforms to develop the country’s rural areas: reform on the use of agricultural technology and productive value chains; comprehensive agricultural and nutritional education reform; Reform of the legal framework of the public sector and the administrative model, and reform of the welfare model for rural families.

The Panamanian President stressed that this was the first national agri-food policy in Panama and America, which he said “should be a historic day for all Panamanians”.

The law was passed unanimously in the National Assembly (AN/Parliament), where it went through three debates before reaching the country’s president, the government reported in a statement.

Rice, corn and beans are the most produced foods in Panama and bananas are the most exported.EFE
