Panama registers more cases of mpox

The report from the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health also states that of the total cases, 18 remain active.

As stipulated in the protocols, the samples containing the new patients were sent to the Gorgas Memorial Institute and tested positive for MPox, according to the name given to the outbreak by the World Health Organization.

In turn, regional health teams are conducting field surveys to identify close contacts in order to offer them vaccination against the disease and break the chain of transmission of the virus and the spread of the disease.

According to the report, of the 99 cases, 97 are men and only two are women, while 45.4 percent of those infected are HIV carriers.

Those infected range in age from 19 to 59 years.

Of the total affected, 14 patients are in home isolation and another four remain in hospitals, while 81 have already completed their deliveries.

The canal nation issued a health alert for mpox in late May 2022 and increased surveillance in all health areas and entry points of the Central American country. jha/ga
