“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” sees $575,000, “Amsterdam” $550,000 – Box Office Previews

Not exactly the flashiest of Thursday night previews as Sony’s feature take of the classic children’s book Lyle, Lyle, crocodile seen $575,000 outside of seasons beginning at 3:00 p.m. at 3,453 locations during New Regency/20th Century Studios/Disney’s Amsterdam baked $550,000 Off-previews that started at 6:00 p.m. in 3,005 locations.

Constance Wu plays Mrs. Primm in LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE.

Here’s the thing, sometimes studios with family movies don’t even hold previews outside of the summer. Yesterday only 15% of K-12 schools were out. Sony didn’t hold previews for the first Peter Rabbit, which debuted in February 2018, but for Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which grossed $900,000 in 2,572 theaters on June 10 last year. Lyle, Lyle’s numbers are above those of Paddington 2, which grossed $325,000 in January 2018, another live-action CGI hybrid based on a classic children’s book, and the first Paddington in January 2015. It all adds up Matinee business extends Saturday, and Sony is betting low on Lyle, Lyle at $11-12 million, while industry estimates are much higher at $15-18 million. Sony placed the film here because it’s the Native American holiday weekend and 42% of all K-12 schools have Mondays off, according to ComScore. Lyle, Lyle is 67% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney had hoped that David O. Russell’s absurd historical comedy would gross around $10 million. It could be in the high single digits if business doesn’t pick up; and the film has all Imax screens. The thumbnails of the image are the head of Bob Odenkirk’s R-rated action film Nobody, which grossed $410,000 on its Thursday before earning a $6.8 million . Amsterdam suffers from bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with 35%. Ouch, this is an $80 million film, twice the price of Russell’s American Hustle, which boasted the star power of Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.

Taylor Swift, who also stars in Amsterdam, is doing her part in getting the Swifties to see the film:

Thursday was $2.1M, down 13% from Wednesday, bringing the horror film’s week-one total to $32.29 million, down 21% from Bullet Train’s week-one gross of $41 million in its first seven days . Yes, weird price, but it just shows you the power of Smile, the fact that it costs $8.7 million less than a Brad Pitt action film. Smile is expected to gross around $11 million over weekend 2.

Those from NewLine don’t worry darling will be second on Thursday with $555,000 in 4,121 theaters, -13% as of Wednesday, a second week of $9.5M and a running total of $34.97M.

MLB Playoffs: Phillies vs. Cardinals Game 1 Trends, Fixtures and Keys

Here we go: The Phillies’ first playoff game in 11 years.

The Phils and Cardinals take on Friday afternoon at 2:07 p.m. on ABC in the first game of a best-of-three series.

Zack Wheeler, who threw 14 scoreless innings against the Cardinals in July, is starting for the Phillies. Jose Quintana, who served to a 2.01 ERA in 12 starts with St. Louis after a deadline trade from Pittsburgh, goes for the cards.

The Cardinals finished the season 93-69 and comfortably won the NL Central. Similar to the Phillies’ success against the Nationals and Marlins, the Cardinals did what they had to do for the bad teams in their division. They went 38-19 against the Reds, Pirates and Cubs, taking two out of three.

St. Louis finished the NL Central relatively early and led by as many as six games after August 24. The Cards haven’t played particularly well in the last three weeks of the season, going 6-9 in their last 15 games and scoring two runs or fewer in nine of their last 16.

But this is still a very talented roster with various waves of veteran presence and playoff experience. Imagine you were a young cardinal like Brendan Donovan, Nolan Gorman, Dylan Carlson or Tyler O’Neill, and you had late-prime vets to emulate in Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, and late-career organizational legends Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Adam Wainwright.

Goldschmidt is the favorite to win the NL MVP after hitting .317/.404/.578 with 41 doubles, 35 homers and 115 RBI this season. Arenado, who hit .293/.358/.533 with 42 doubles, 30 homers, 103 RBI and his trademark amazing defense, also placed in the top five of the poll. Neither had a strong September, but both were remarkably consistent from April through August.

Pujols enjoyed a resurgent season, hitting his 700th homer that same season. Wainwright and Molina broke the record for most games started from a battery. But it wasn’t just a cool story for Pujols, he was justifiably dangerous in the last two months of the season, hitting .324 with 1.128 OPS and 17 homers after August 10.

Donovan, a 25-year-old left-hander, has been extremely valuable to the Cardinals this season and could finish third in the NL Rookie of the Year race behind Michael Harris II and Spencer Strider. Playing five different defensive positions, he hit .281 with a .394 OBP and finished the season as the Cardinals’ leadoff hitter. Tommy Edman, a fast and smart baserunner who conceded 32 for 35 in stolen bases, had been at this location for most of the year.

Goldschmidt is only 5 for 23 (.217) lifetimes against Wheeler. Arenado is 5 for 14, all singles. Together, they have an extra base hit and an RBI in 41 plate appearances against the Phillies ace.

Edman is 1 for 9 and Corey Dickerson is 3 for 14, each with four strikeouts. Surprisingly, Wheeler has never faced Pujols.

The Cardinals’ starting pitcher Quintana doesn’t go deep into the games. He probably won’t be out any later than after Bryce Harper’s third record appearance, unless he throws a jewel. The Phillies’ top two lefties, Harper and Kyle Schwarber, are a combined 1 for 12 from Quintana with a single and five K’s.

Starters Adam Wainwright, Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery will all be available from the bullpen, with Miles Mikolas scheduled for Game 2 against Aaron Nola.

Rhys Hoskins saw Quintana well, hitting base with a homer in 8 of 15 plate appearances. Nick Castellanos has seen him almost as often as the rest of the team combined — he’s 11 for 49 (.275) with two homers.

A number of Phillies will make their postseason debuts – Wheeler, JT Realmuto, Jean Segura, Hoskins, Alec Bohm, obviously the rookies. Harper and Castellanos have never been part of a playoff series win. This is the opportunity everyone in the Phillies clubhouse has been waiting for.

Wheeler against a mid- to back-end starting pitcher in Quintana is a decent Game 1 setup. Despite not being victorious until Game 160, the Phillies go in with a rested bullpen and the one-two they envisioned the playoffs things out.

Algeria ‘revises’ gas prices with its main buyer in Spain

Algerian public hydrocarbons group Sonatrach announced on Thursday (October 6) that it has signed a deal with its main customer in Spain, Naturgy, to “revision” the prices of the gas it supplies. The nature of this “revision” has not been specified, but Sonatrach has mentioned an increase in the price of its gas sold to Spain in recent months in the context of a diplomatic crisis between Algiers and Madrid.

This decision was announced at a time when prices continue to rise due to disruptions in Russian gas supplies to Europe due to the war in Ukraine, a Russian-occupied country.

“Sonatrach and its partner Naturgy have agreed to revise the prices of existing long-term gas supply contracts in light of market developments, thus ensuring the balance of their contracts on a win-win basis,” the Algerian company said in a press release.

The agreement was signed in Algiers by Sonatrach CEO Toufik Hakkar and his Naturgy colleague Francisco Reynes Massanet. Naturgy is the main Spanish buyer of Algerian gas. The Spanish group has an almost equal stake (49%/51%) with Sonatrach in the Medgaz pipeline, which directly connects Spain to the Algerian gas fields.

The question of Western Sahara

According to Enagas, manager of Spain’s gas network, in August Algeria was Spain’s second largest gas supplier (24%), behind the United States (26.5%) and ahead of Nigeria (15.3%). Algerian gas’s share of Spanish imports has fallen sharply in recent months, while until recently it accounted for 50% of its imports. This decline came against a background of serious tensions between Algiers and Madrid.

The Algerian government has been furious with Spain since the government of socialist Pedro Sánchez decided in March to back Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara in a bid to end a nearly year-long diplomatic crisis between Madrid and Rabat.

In response to this reversal in Madrid’s traditionally neutral position, the Algerian authorities suspended a cooperation agreement with Spain in early June. The issue of Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony considered a “non-autonomous territory” by the United Nations, has pitted Morocco – which controls 80% of it – against the Algiers-backed Polisario Front separatists for decades.

Putin criticized by the faithful quotDirect comparisonquot The Kremlin admits

The cracks in the Putin regime are finding the first official reactions, albeit with the aim of minimizing friction. It all starts with an article in the Washington Post, a reputable US newspaper — Watergate’s, to be clear — that said Russian President Vladimir Putin had a direct confrontation with a member of his inner circle who criticized him for mismanaging the war in Ukraine.

From the painting depicting the puppy to the judo center dedicated to the tsar, Russia is celebrating Putin's 70th birthday

The Wp cites US intelligence sources who included this information in US President Joe Biden’s daily briefing. The US-007 report does not reveal the identities of Putin’s supporters, but it is believed that Putin’s close circle includes mostly former colleagues in the KGB and the St. Petersburg administration, of which the Russian president was deputy mayor in the 1990s. “Our assessments suggest that Putin’s closest associates and advisers are particularly concerned about Russia’s recent losses, poor decisions and massive military bottlenecks,” a US National Security official told The Washington Post. “There are a lot of people who think things aren’t going well or that they’re not going in the right direction,” another source said.

Moscow, for its part, spoke to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who acknowledged that there had been “differences” and discussions surrounding Putin as the Russian president faced crucial decisions such as “partial mobilization” “more than seven months” since the Russian invasion passed to Ukraine. “In those moments there are disagreements. Some think we should act differently – Peskov told the Washington Post – but that’s part of the normal working process.”

“There are discussions about the job, about the economy, about the management of the military operation. There are discussions about the education system. It’s part of the normal work process and not a sign of division,” Putin’s spokesman continued, explaining the friction in the tsar’s magic circle.

The indigenous people of Panama seek recognition of their territories

According to a statement by the coordinator, the IACHR granted the government of the isthmus country four months to respond to violations of the human rights of this original people regarding their ancestral lands in Bocas del Toro province bordering with Costa Rica.

King Bulú of the Bri Brí, Joaquín González, stated that the arduous struggle for recognition of his people’s ancestral rights of occupation was beginning to bear fruit and he hoped that justice would finally be served.

For his part, the President of Coonapip, Marcelo Guerra, said it was time for the Panamanian government to bring order to the situation of the Bri Brí people, for justice to be done and their human rights to be respected, otherwise they would be doomed to disappear.

In recent statements to La Estrella de Panamá newspaper, Guerra argued that it was not possible to deny the Bri Brí the right to collectively allocate their lands to foreigners with political, economic and other powerful interests, and would happily grant them titles.

He stated that the struggle for the recognition of the rights of indigenous peoples in Panama does not stop and that Coonapip remains firm in this struggle.

The lawsuit came after the Executive Branch ordered the filing of the application file for the collective title through the National Land Authority on April 12, 2019, as it was deemed incomplete.

While the Bri Brí women’s leader denounced that since then, dozens of individual titles have been processed overnight and new owners appeared in their territories who had never lived in that area and began following tracks and cutting down trees without control.

Iranian armed forces want to act against protests

The Iranian military says it is ready to fight the ongoing protests in the country. The announcement was made today by army, Revolutionary Guard and police commanders in a joint letter to Iran’s Supreme Spiritual Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as reported by ISNA news agency. “We will destroy the diabolical plans of the Islamic Republic’s enemies,” the commanders’ letter read, according to ISNA.

Khamenei described the anti-government protests that have been going on for three weeks as a foreign conspiracy. According to the constitution, not only does he have the last word in all strategic matters, but he is also the supreme commander of the country’s armed forces.

So far, police and volunteers from Islamic groups have been mobilized in response to the protests.

Death of Amini: Official report rules out police violence

Meanwhile, the state institute of forensic medicine has ruled out police violence in connection with the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. According to the Misan news portal, the report on Amini’s death explains that the Iranian Kurd had suffered from a thyroid disease since childhood.

Investigations would have shown that previous illness after his arrest led to heart failure – which led to his death. Police violence is ruled out because no traces of a blow to the head on the body were found.

Parents: No previous illness

Amini’s parents have repeatedly denied their daughter’s previous illness in recent weeks. She was perfectly healthy until she was arrested by the religious police and all claims to the contrary were lies, the family said.

New York declares state of emergency due to arrival of thousands of immigrants

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency Friday (7) in response to the thousands of Latino immigrants who have poured into the city from the United States’ southern border in recent months. They overload the homeless shelter system in the metropolis.

New York expects to spend $1 billion to handle the flow of these asylum seekers, Adams said in a speech at City Hall. More than 17,000 people have arrived in New York since April. Since the beginning of September, an average of five to six buses have been arriving every day. It was nine on Thursday, Adams said.

The surge in migrant arrivals has resulted in unprecedented numbers of people in shelters across the city.

“While our compassion is boundless, our resources are not,” Adams said, calling for support from federal and state governments. “We’re standing on the edge of a cliff.”

The state of emergency will make it easier for city authorities to more quickly coordinate their response to the situation, Adams said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican who is seeking a third term in November’s midterm elections, sent more than 3,000 immigrants to New York to draw attention to the record number of US border crossings.

Adams criticized Abbott for not alerting city officials when he was sending migrants north.

“Thousands of asylumseekers were bussed into New York City and just left without warning, coordination or care,” the Democrat accused Adams on Friday, calling the crisis “made up.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, recently brought a group of about 50 immigrants to the wealthy enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Democrats accuse Abbott and DeSantis of using vulnerable migrants politically, while Republicans blame President Joe Biden’s administration for failing to stem the tide at the border.

The Democratcontrolled city of El Paso has bused about 7,000 migrants into New York since late August, although city leaders say they are coordinating with New York officials, unlike Abbott.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency last month. She created a new office to look after immigrants and asked the federal government for financial support.
