SARAH VINE’s My TV Week: Netflix’s Blonde is mesmerizingly sad and beautiful…just like Marilyn

BLONDE, NETFLIX

Valuation:

A screen display of Joyce Carol Oates’ fictional – and I stress the word fictional – biography of Marilyn Monroe, Blonde, has caused quite a controversy. It was criticized for its violent sex scenes, but also for its brutally dejected depiction of the life of a woman who is still revered as an icon 60 years after her death.

It’s about how the monster that created them ended up consuming them

Actually, director Andrew Dominik’s film couldn’t be more appropriate in my opinion. It’s painful, mesmerizingly beautiful—yet so full of sadness it’s almost painful to look at. Like Marilyn herself.

This is the story of a lost, lonely, abused and terrified child who has grown into one of the most famous and desired women in the world – but at his heart has never escaped his past.

In Blonde, Marilyn is not a real person, she is an avatar for Norma Jeane Mortenson, an armor of flirtatious kisses and breathless sighs, a vessel for men’s lust, a slave to Hollywood’s money machine.

The Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde has caused quite a controversy. It was criticized for its violent sex scenes, but also for its brutally dejected depiction of the life of a woman who is still revered as an icon 60 years after her death. Pictured: Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe

The story here is how Norma Jeane tried and failed to outrun Marilyn, how the monster that created her finally devoured her. It might be utter crap as a concept, of course, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out.

There are some very awkward sex scenes, and two in particular – one at the beginning of the film, one at the end – that are torturous.

It has nothing to do with nudity (although there is plenty of nudity elsewhere); it is the fact that they are so brutal and soul-destroying by nature that they make the heart weep. That’s kind of the point.

Ana de Armas gives a riveting performance as the doomed Norma Jeane (above) with trembling lips and liquid eyes. The camera loves her as much as she ever loved Marilyn, and she conveys that childlike quality that Marilyn had – a quality that was key to her appeal, yet also deeply disturbing – brilliantly.

The more Marilyn is in the spotlight, the more Norma Jeane searches for dark places to hide in, and Armas navigates that journey with utter conviction.

There are few good men in this film. Marilyn’s makeup artist, Allan “Whitey” Snyder, is one of them; Her third husband, playwright Arthur Miller, who is taken aback by her insights (much emphasis is placed on Norma Jeane’s intellectual aspirations and her desire to be taken seriously as an actress), is another.

Everyone else is a predator in one form or another, worst of all John F. Kennedy, whose treatment of her as little more than a hourly prostitute helps push her over the edge. The film comes close to sanctioning the conspiracy theory that he had her killed; but in his contempt for her he might as well have had it.

Ultimately, this is a film about a woman who has never fully believed in her own power or abilities, who despite being at the top of her game has never seen her own worth. I suppose that’s ultimately what makes her story so relatable — and why she remains a box-office hit 60 years later

SO GOOD, IT’S SCARY!

I know, I know, I missed the start of series four of Ghosts (Fri, BBC1) because I was away. But I just have to give this show some credit. It’s a prime example of what the BBC does best: a modest budget (obviously) but backed by a fine ensemble cast (including Lolly Adefope as Ghost Kitty, below), a sharp and witty script, a generous dose of silliness – and such something all ages can enjoy.

It’s bizarre: Paxman: Putting Up With Parkinson (Tue, ITV) should have been a wistful watch, seeing how the once-mighty Paxo was brought down by this terrible disease. But actually I found it uplifting, not to mention fascinating, and very funny at times.

“As you get older, you fall down. Especially if you’ve had a few.’ Jeremy Paxman on giving up Parkinson’s, Tuesday ITV

That’s mainly because Paxman doesn’t take Parkinson’s at all, he’s fucking mad at the thing. Whatever his illness has taken away from him physically, he’s still as combative as ever.

But Parkinson’s seems to have brought out a new side to him – one that chats amiably to nurses and bravely takes a dance class. I’m not saying there’s a silver lining, how could there be – but it’s a revelation.

THE WALK-IN, MONDAY, ITV

Valuation:

This new five-part drama starring Stephen Graham couldn’t be further from Hollywood, but it’s no less compelling. I have to confess that I could see Stephen Graham in anything, such is the intensity of the man’s acting (although part of me really wishes he played a role as a goofy aristocrat in Bridgerton or something like that, just for fun).

Sarah praised Stephen Graham's

Sarah praised Stephen Graham’s “intense” acting in new BBC drama The Walk-In, which she called “engrossing”. Image: The actor in the walk-in

Anyway, intense is the name of the game here, as Graham plays a reformed neo-Nazi constantly on the run from his ex-colleagues, trying (and failing) to have a semblance of normal life with his wife and three young children respectively. sucked back into the cesspool of extremism all the time.

This is a show that attempts to address contemporary cultural issues — and almost succeeds.

The best thing to do is to explore the process of radicalization, tracing how someone can go from being a sane member of society to a drooling, hateful madman.

How a combination of ignorance, lack of opportunity and hopelessness makes people easy prey for charismatic hate cults that isolate them from their friends and family and gradually lure them into committing unspeakably evil deeds.

Where it scratches is the Luvvie clichés, particularly around Brexit (leave evil/stay holy) and simplifying – some might say glossing over – some of the very complex cultural issues surrounding issues like grooming gangs.

Last Thursday evening (6), the presenter William Bonner surprised the viewers of Jornal Nacional. The news anchor started the show in an unusual way, leaving many newspaper viewers confused as to the reason for the move.

After the scale (summary of the main topics covered in the newspaper), the camera closed William Bonner, who quickly called for a break. The break lasted almost five minutes. “These are the highlights of this forthcoming issue of Jornal Nacional. See you soon,” the moderator said without giving an explanation.

It’s worth noting that Jornal Nacional usually doesn’t show the commercial break at the beginning of the news. Usually, after the vignette and the highlights of the night, the news is presented in full. From time to time, Rede Globo sells a 30second spot for ads, known as the “golden break.”

On the Internet, many viewers wondered about the unusual way William Bonner Open the National Journal. Many even joked about the story that the presenter had a stomach ache. “Has Bonner given up doing Jornal Nacional?” asked one netizen, putting forward another hypothesis. Check out some memes:

Hockey Canada: “It’s time for them to go!” Lance Trudeau; other sponsors withdraw their support

“It’s time for her to go!” Justin Trudeau is opening the door to creating a new organization to replace Hockey Canada as new sponsors withdraw their support.

Invited to address the Hockey Canada scandal again, Canada’s Prime Minister spoke out against the organization.

“The fact that they don’t understand that people have completely lost faith in what they are doing prolongs the pain.”

Hockey Canada sponsors flee

Far from being impressed by Hockey Canada’s most recent appearance before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, some sponsors of the national association have withdrawn their support since Wednesday.

TELUS, Esso, Chevrolet, Sobeys, Skip the Dishes and Canadian Tire followed on Thursday after Tim Hortons and Scotiabank, which ended their sponsorship of the men’s hockey program for this season. In the case of the latter company, the decision appears to be final.

“In our view, Hockey Canada continues to resist significant cultural change and we can no longer confidently proceed together,” Canadian Tire said in a statement. We are proud of our sporting commitments and will continue to invest in our national sport by redirecting our support to hockey-related organizations that better align with our values.

The opinion is identical on the TELUS side, but that does not preclude allying again with Hockey Canada if the latter makes the desired changes.

“We are deeply heartbroken by the association’s lack of action and commitment to fostering the culture change that is needed,” the company wrote through a spokesman. TELUS will not sponsor any men’s hockey programs in 2022-23, which includes the upcoming World Junior Championships. We remain passionate hockey fans and together we stand for systemic change that ensures the game is safe for everyone.”

The Esso brand, owned by Imperial Oil Group, announced the withdrawal of all support for the men’s national team for the season, including the World Juniors, until they see “meaningful accountability, transparency and change”.

“We are disappointed that we have not yet seen more meaningful action,” Esso added in a statement sent to Sportsnet.

“Like many Canadians, we are deeply disturbed by the recent allegations and have decided to end our partnership with Hockey Canada,” Skip the Dishes said.

“At GM (General Motors), we do not tolerate abuse of any kind and we want Hockey Canada to once again set a positive example for all Canadians,” Chevrolet said in a statement.

Hockey Canada continues to face much criticism, including from the country’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of the federal government. Amid a crisis since the uncovering of a gang rape case that it settled out of court with the alleged victim, the organization believes it has done well over the past few months, according to statements from interim chief executive Andrea Skinner, who is also the accused the media of misinformation.

“It’s time for them to go!” Mr. Trudeau said Thursday as he opened the door to the formation of a new organization to replace Hockey Canada.

A mature decision

If such major sponsors have chosen to distance themselves from the federation, it is because their partnership has yielded more negative than positive results, according to Professor Luc Dupont at the University of Ottawa’s communications department.

“They measured all this, it is certain that intuition is not speaking here. These are numbers, these are studies,” he argued in an interview with LCN on Thursday.

Companies jumping overboard send a clear message to Hockey Canada, as their multimillion-dollar contributions will hurt the federation’s wallet even more than Hockey Quebec’s refusal to pay it the $3 per registration fee.

However, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, Scotiabank and TELUS will also lose visibility.

“To take Tim Hortons as an example, it’s not an easy decision. I remind you that the Canadian positioning of this channel is based on this association, among others,” said Mr. Dupont.

“Tim Hortons is just a restaurant chain, we agree on that. But from the moment you sponsor one event rather than another, you make a certain number of decisions, and all of these help create the brand’s image or brand. In the case of Tim Hortons, this is extremely important. It’s the equivalent of McDonald’s leaving Russia,” he added.

Tropical Storm Julia forming in southern Caribbean Yale Climate

Tropical Storm Julia forming in southern Caribbean » Yale Climate Connections

Tropical Storm Julia, which formed along Venezuela’s northern coast at 11 a.m. EDT Friday with sustained peak winds of 40 miles per hour, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and bring dangerous heavy rains to much of Central America and southeastern Mexico. Julia is expected to land in Nicaragua on Sunday morning.

Julia’s October 7 inception date is about two weeks later than the typical appearance of the season’s 10th named storm on September 22. This season’s activity now stands at 10 named storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes with an Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) Index of 78% of the average for the date. The 1991-2020 averages for October 7 are 11.6 named storms, 5.6 hurricanes, and 2.5 major hurricanes. So, despite Ian’s disastrous rampage, the Atlantic as a whole is still having a slightly less active season than usual.

Julia was formed in an unusual place for a tropical cyclone: just off the coast of Venezuela. When it was tropical depression between Thursday 11:00 p.m. EDT and Friday 8:00 a.m. EDT, Julia crossed two peninsulas of Venezuela, Paraguaná and Guajira, which jut north into the Caribbean Sea. Only one other tropical cyclone on NOAA records made it further south to Venezuela: Tropical Storm Bret (1993), which moved physically through northern Venezuela’s interior and caused devastating flooding that killed more than 200 people.

Figure 1. Tropical Depression 13 (center of circle) as it forms on the eastern side of the Paraguaná Peninsula and all other tropical cyclones that passed within 60 nautical miles of TD 13’s location at 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday, October 6 are , 2022. On Friday afternoon, Julia brought severe thunderstorms to northern Venezuela and Colombia, as shown in satellite imagery. Julia had a modest number of severe thunderstorms that gradually increased in area coverage and organization, with significant low-level spiral banding. However, its proximity to the coast of South America disrupted development.

Forecast for Julia

A high-pressure ridge north of Julia will keep it on a westward trajectory at about 15 miles per hour through early next week, with its center just off the coast of South America by Friday afternoon. Aside from the proximity to land, conditions will be favorable for Julia’s development, with warm waters near 29.5 degrees Celsius (85 °F), moderate wind shear of 10-15 knots, and a humid atmosphere (moderate relative humidity). from 75-80%).

Figure 2. Track forecasts up to 10 days for Julia from the Friday 7 October 6Z run of the GFS Ensemble model. Individual forecasts by the 31 ensemble members are the lines, color-coded according to the wind speed in knots they predict for Julia; red colors correspond to a Category 1 hurricane. Time in hours from model initialization time is shown in gray text. (Image credit: weathernerds.org)

Models agree well on Julia’s forward speed, with the storm gradually slowing from its current forward speed of 18 mph to about 12 mph by the time it made landfall in Nicaragua Sunday morning. Once Julia is inland, the models show a likely west-northwest curvature that would keep the center overland until it resolves. The models are tightly clustered in their track forecast for Julia and a Nicaragua landfall is highly likely, with the Colombian islands of San Andres and Providencia off the coast of Nicaragua also at risk.

After Julia pulled away from the coast of South America Friday afternoon, a period of steady strengthening is expected, and a burst of faster strengthening is possible Saturday through early Sunday. The western Caribbean will have favorable conditions for Julia to turn into a hurricane this weekend, and this part of the Atlantic is notorious for seeing some fancy fast intensification events. Friday 6Z runs of the top two intensity models, HMON and HWRF, show Julia reaching Category 2 strength on Sunday morning Nicaragua landing in 100-mph winds. As of 12 p.m. Friday, the stats-based SHIPS and DTOPS rapid intensification tools both gave a nearly 30 percent chance that Julia would be near hurricane strength by Saturday morning, and SHIPS gave a 29 percent chance that Julia would face sustained winds 105 mph (category 2) by Sunday morning.

Figure 3. Predicted 5-day precipitation amounts ending Tuesday, October 11, 8 p.m. EDT from the 0Z Friday, October 7 European model run. The model predicted widespread heavy rains over much of Central America and southeastern Mexico, with some areas receiving over 10 inches (dark purple colors). (Image credit: weathermodels.com)

Heavy rains the biggest threat

The main threat from Julia will be dangerous heavy rains of 5 to 10 inches, with some higher amounts expected across much of Central America and southeastern Mexico beginning Saturday. Much of Central America, including that part of eastern Nicaragua where Julia’s heaviest rains will fall, has been relatively dry for the past three months, receiving 50% to 80% of average precipitation. However, the arrival of heavy rains in north-western Honduras will be undesirable: the region is struggling with flooding as a result of heavy rains in the last week of September. This flooding on the Ulúa River in the Sula Valley killed 12 people and resulted in the evacuation of 16,000 people. Saturated soils in the region will lead to further flooding when there are rains in Julia. The European model’s Friday run 0Z (Figure 3) projected that Julia would bring five-day rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches to northwestern Honduras.

Widespread shortages of Adderall and other versions of the drug to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are deepening in the US, causing despair among patients who rely on the drug to focus.

The largest Adderall maker in the US, Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd., said last month that a labor shortage earlier in the year disrupted production, the Wall Street Journal reported.

A Teva spokesman said at the time that the company expected retail shortages to be addressed in the coming weeks, but pharmacies are now reporting ADHD treatment shortages from a number of other drugmakers.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) this week reported shortages of several versions of the amphetamine from numerous manufacturers, as reports surface across the country of the impact that having low supplies is having on patients who can’t fill their prescriptions.

“It scares people,” said Dr. Robert Shulman, psychiatrist at Rush University Medical Center, opposite FOX 32 in Chicago. “It scares parents who have kids who are just starting school. It scares adults who depend on the medication to get them through the workday. Patients can’t get their medication and we get a lot of calls, so it’s so much extra work and patients have to go to pharmacies to see where they have supplies.”

New York Post columnist Karol Markowicz joined Kennedy to discuss her recent column about an increase in prescription drugs being given to children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shulman said there are several factors contributing to the shortages, including record-high prescriptions for the drug following the COVID-19 lockdowns, a surge in recreational use of the stimulant, and manufacturing restrictions imposed by the federal government.

A spokesman for Sandoz, a Novartis company that makes a generic version of Adderall, told FOX Business Friday that there was no shortage of their product on the market and that the company was “fulfilling all current customer orders,” but citing regulatory ones Factors towards could contribute to the situation with the drug.

The spokesperson explained that Sandoz, like other drugmakers, forecasts manufacturing based on customer pre-orders and has received approval from the US Drug Enforcement Administration to meet forecasted order levels. If, due to increased demand, a customer orders more than the drug manufacturers forecast, the manufacturers are unable to fulfill those orders and are considered “backordered”.

Gisele Bundchen ‘done’ with Tom Brady, marriage can’t ‘fix’

The Brady cuff is irreparable.

Gisele Bundchen is “done” trying to make her marriage to Tom Brady work, a source close to the model revealed amid rumors they are traveling to Splitsville.

“She’s done with her marriage,” the insider told People in an article published on Friday. “She’s been upset about it for a long time and it’s still difficult, but she feels like she has to move on. She doesn’t think her marriage can be fixed.”

But the source also claimed that the Victoria’s Secret model, 42, is “doing fine” amid the heartbreak.

“She’s just trying to figure out her life,” the insider said, adding, “She doesn’t have much contact with Tom.”

Bundchen worries more about the kids than herself. She and the NFL star share 12-year-old son Benjamin Rein and 9-year-old daughter Vivian Lake. Brady also has a 15-year-old son, John Edward, with his ex, Bridget Moynahan.

The source shared that Bundchen “feels bad for the kids, but she doesn’t anticipate any custody issues.”

She would most likely stay in the $17 million mansion the couple recently bought on Miami Beach’s ultra-exclusive Indian Creek Island, the source claimed.

“Gisele loves Miami. She has friends there. She can see herself living there permanently,” the source told the outlet.

“Even here, she’s still trying to figure things out. She does yoga, meditates and takes care of herself. She doesn’t pressure herself to make drastic decisions.”

This week, Page Six exclusively revealed that both Bundchen and Brady, 45, have hired divorce lawyers. The news comes a month after sources told us the estranged couple had an epic fight that led to “their demise.”

“I don’t think there’s going to be a comeback now,” an insider recently told Page Six. “They both have lawyers and are looking at what a split will entail, who gets what and what the finances will be.”

The couple have lived in separate homes since moving to Miami and Tampa Bay amid devastating Hurricane Ian.

“There was trouble in the marriage over his decision not to retire,” a source told us. “Gisele has always been the one with the children. They agreed that he would retire to focus on family, then he changed his mind.”

For his part, Brady has maintained that family and football are his priorities.

The couple married in February 2009.

Joe Biden promises an answer quotfast and strictquot in case

Is Putin as close to using nuclear weapons as Biden suggests?

Several sources in Washington told CNN that the US President’s statements made to a small committee were not based on new information.

During the night from Thursday to Friday, US President Joe Biden wanted to get particularly serious. Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser organized in a New York apartment, the White House tenant warned of the threat of a nuclear “apocalypse” that he said had never been greater since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962.

No new information

But are these threats really part of an irreversible escalation of tensions that could lead to the use of nuclear weapons for the third time since 1945? For Lova Rinel, researcher on nuclear deterrence, the statements made by Joe Biden, which are part of the nuclear rhetoric, are to be separated from what is really happening in the operational area, the so-called “strategic dialogue”.

“Strategic dialogue is military implementation. For example, are the bombers armed? These are discussions. And the various authorities confirm it: we are still talking to the Russian authorities on the issue. Level, so there is no increase in nuclear alert.” said the researcher BFMTV.

Following concerns over Joe Biden’s remarks, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre was forced to issue an update this Friday: “We have no reason to adjust our own stance on nuclear weapons, nor do we have any indication that we will.” Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons immediately.”

Same story on the page of many senior American officials contacted by CNN. On condition of anonymity, they all assured that there was no evidence that Vladimir Putin intended to use nuclear fire or that he had taken any steps to that effect. Several senior officials were even surprised by the particularly serious tone Joe Biden used Thursday night when no new information reached the intelligence community.

concern among westerners

But the words of the American President illustrate the concern that is rising in Western law firms. And for several reasons. First, because Vladimir Putin has repeated many times since the invasion of Ukraine began that Russia would not hesitate to use all the weapons at its disposal should the situation deteriorate.

Currently, the Moscow army has suffered major setbacks in the operational sphere since September and the launch of a particularly effective counteroffensive by the Ukrainian army. This is evidenced by the recapture of Lyman, where Russian troops allowed themselves to be surrounded.

While the start of the offensive in February was marked by a united front of Russian elites behind their president, the first contradictory voices are becoming loud. According to the Washington Post, a very close adviser to Vladimir Putin, who is among his inner circle, recently told him that things were not going in the right direction. For his part, Chechen autocrat Ramzan Kadyrov proposed the use of strategic nuclear weapons on the battlefield to defuse the situation.

Can Vladimir Putin decide alone?

Would a cornered Vladimir Putin be more unpredictable? According to Russian nuclear doctrine, the use of nuclear weapons can only be justified by an attack that threatens the very existence of the Russian Federation. However, the current situation in Ukraine does not endanger the existence of Putin’s country, although it is up to him to define the term “existential threat”.

It also remains to be seen whether, under Russia’s nuclear decision-making scheme, a simple decision by Vladimir Putin is enough to initiate a strike. In Soviet times, such a decision had to be made jointly with the Minister of Armed Forces and the Chief of the General Staff. But nothing indicates that this principle was maintained with the fall of the USSR.

For researcher Lova Rinel, the current situation should be analyzed in terms of Russia’s nuclear strategy. “It’s part of their way of expressing themselves. Vladimir Putin, his entourage, spend their time blowing hot and cold. You play incendiary firefighters. This has one goal: to destabilize NATO, which is Russia’s enemy. They are trying to get the world on edge for us to stop sanctions and logistical support to Ukraine. It’s a nuclear dialectic showdown,” says the researcher.

Asked about the issue in Prague, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron did not agree with Joe Biden’s recent remarks and refused to do “political fiction”.
