According to the President of the World Bank, a “fifth wave of the debt crisis” is in sight

The world is facing a “fifth wave of the debt crisis,” World Bank (WB) President David Malpass warned on Friday, calling for support for struggling countries.

The pandemic has pushed many countries to borrow more to prop up their economies and now face the risk of their debt straining from the combined effect of inflation and rising interest rates.

“More transparency”

“I’m concerned about the level of debt, concerned about a number of countries,” Malpass told an online news conference. “In 2022 alone, some of the poorest countries will have matured some $44 billion in debt held by the private sector or other governments,” an amount greater than the international aid received by the same countries World Bank.

“We are currently facing what I believe is a fifth wave of the debt crisis,” he added, calling for “radically more transparency” on debt levels, from both lenders and borrowers.

Call to China

The World Bank President was addressing the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and a G20 finance meeting to be held in Washington next week.

David Malpass took the opportunity to once again urge China, one of the top lenders to low-income countries, to communicate more about the loan amounts and to do more to facilitate the restructuring of the most problematic debts.

His comments follow warnings from IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, who on Thursday estimated that nearly a quarter of emerging economies and up to 60% of the poorest countries are at risk of a debt crisis.

Explosive cocktail for business

A situation exacerbated by the slowdown in the global economy under the combined effect of inflation fed by the rise in energy and food prices and the monetary tightening decided by central banks to limit the latter.

“Given the risk of a financial crisis in developing countries, it is very important to recognize the role that advanced economies play in supporting growth,” said David Malpass. “Developing countries also need to see more capital flowing into them,” and even if the WB tries to increase its aid, “it’s just not enough,” he added.

The World Bank records four previous debt crises since the 1970s that most often led to financial crises in emerging and developing countries, such as the Asian crisis in the late 1990s.

Netflix cooperates with cinemas

Netflix cooperates with cinemas

(Los Angeles) Online streaming platform Netflix, long accused of being the gravedigger of cinema, has just forged an unprecedented alliance with three major networks of darkrooms in the United States, giving them the first to produce the second work from Knives Out show franchise.

Posted at 6:54 p.m

Split

Glass Onion: A Daggers Drawn Story, a mystery film starring British star Daniel Craig as the astute detective, will hit theaters for a week from November 23-29, according to a statement released Thursday.

The online distribution giant has reached an agreement with three major American cinema networks, Regal, AMC and Cineworld, to grant them this exclusivity: subscribers to the platform will have to wait until December 23 to see the film at home.

The feature film will be shown in only 600 cinemas, mainly in the United States and in other markets such as the UK, Spain, Australia or Germany, but not in France.

This connection between Reed Hastings’ group and cinemas is a small revolution: Until now, Netflix has allowed itself to invade dark rooms during festivals for marketing purposes or have its films compete for the Oscars, but had never made such a deal.

” I’m so happy […]. These films are designed to engage audiences and I can’t wait to feel the energy of the crowd,” director Rian Johnson said in the statement.

Netflix spent more than $460 million last year to buy the rights to the blockbuster Knives Out.

Cinemas are currently trying to bring back part of the audience that deserted after the pandemic. On the other hand, fierce competition between platforms (Disney+, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max) is causing growing pains for Netflix. The industry veteran lost nearly 1.2 million subscribers in the first half of the year, a first in a decade.

In this context, the cinema network AMC welcomed this marriage of convenience.

“Cinema halls and digital distribution platforms can continue to coexist,” said her boss Adam Aron, who is quoted in a press release and wants “more cooperation between AMC and Netflix”.

By coordinating the release of a blockbuster like this, “theaters make more money by being able to show more titles, and thanks to the greater cultural resonance these films can get from a theatrical release, they eventually get released to a wider audience. They will, too.” viewed on online streaming platforms,” he said.

1665191959 I was addicted to drugs

I was addicted to drugs

For years, President Biden repeated the same mantra when asked about Hunter Biden’s influence activities and alleged crimes: “My son has done nothing wrong.” It was always incredible — as was his denial of any knowledge of these deals despite emails and pictures to the contrary.

So the President and the press moved on to a new defense. As the father recently pointed out to his son, “He’s been struggling with an addiction problem. He got over it. He wrote about it.”

The family and media have been cultivating the position for months as they anticipate possible criminal charges. Such allegations would not only be embarrassing for the President, but also for the media, which has been actively involved in covering up the multimillion-dollar influence schemes of the Biden family, including Hunter and his uncle James. Once the criminal behavior has been uncovered, all that remains is defense against addiction.

Hunter Biden’s autobiographical book laid the groundwork for this last line of defense. While the book didn’t sell particularly well with audiences, the media offered flattering interviews about his stories of addiction. The narrative has been intensified by much of the same media outlet that buried the scandal, including articles about how the family fought “to keep him alive”.

A photo of Hunter Biden's infamous laptop.A photo of Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop shows his addiction-ruined teeth.

Hunter Biden laptopFeds have been sitting in a criminal case against the first son for months.

Now, The Post reports that prosecutors are guessing charges given the addiction and how it could undermine any criminal process. While there’s no question that the defense would likely use such an addiction, it’s usually more of a concern to pursue a conviction than an indictment. Addiction may be brought before the court as a mitigating factor in determining the accused’s guilt.

The most obvious problem for anti-addiction is that Hunter didn’t appear to have had a chemical-based challenge in maintaining a multi-million dollar global influence trading system. The image of a crackhead holed up in high-end hotels with call girls is eroded by thousands of emails about international money transfers and complex deals stretching from Moscow to Kyiv to Beijing.

The fact is, you can be an addict or an alcoholic and still be a criminal. Addiction didn’t seem to stop prosecutors in cases like the murder trial of The Sopranos actor Lillo Brancato and the film A Bronx Tale. Brancato was addicted to drugs when he took part in a burglary that ended in a shooting. He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years.

Indeed, in some cases, prosecutors use addiction as a motive for committing crimes, particularly for paying for or acquiring further crimes.

Not only would this possible charge not be based on a drug offense, it would also involve a high-functioning defendant who would have made millions through influence-peddling. Indeed, the now sober Hunter has repeatedly insisted that while his family name earned him many of his previous positions, he is a lawyer with experience useful in jobs such as serving on the board of Ukrainian energy conglomerate Burisma Holdings.

It will be difficult for Hunter to go from the privileged but capable defense to the hopelessly dependent defense. Most hopeless addicts are trying to hack property or rake in a few bucks for their next hit. Hunter flew around the world arranging meetings with his father and coordinating multiple global accounts.

James BidenThe media has been complicit in the cover-up of the Biden family’s multi-million dollar influence schemes, including Hunter and his uncle James, above. AP

Furthermore, using addiction to defeat the gun and tax burden will only exacerbate questions about the allegations of influencing peddling. If Hunter was a hopeless addict incapable of criminal intent or reasonable decision-making, why were foreign prospects at his door offering him millions of dollars as a board member, attorney, or consultant? With no skill or ability to sell, you are left with raw and open corruption to gain access to or influence over his father.

For President Biden, defending the hopeless addict will also fall short with most people outside of the mainstream media. During this time some of his own bills were being paid by Joe, including accounts associated with his overseas operations.

Of course, the defense can be more effective as an excuse for the Justice Department to agree to a generous plea deal than in an actual trial. Attorney General Merrick Garland has already protected both Joe and Hunter Biden by refusing to appoint a special counsel, despite what the current regulations clearly require to do so. Congressional Democrats have continued to block any investigation into the Biden family’s influence schemes.

The best-case scenario is a plea deal that does not include Foreign Agent Registration Act fees. The Justice Department has used FARA aggressively in previous criminal cases such as that of Paul Manafort. However, such an indictment would likely reveal details about previous foreign dealings of Hunter Biden and possibly his uncle James. A plea for a gun registration count and tax counts would allow political and media allies to declare the matter closed.

This is why increasing addiction is both predictable and instructive. By implying that it would complicate a process, the family and their allies can present a plea deal as a good deal for the public. But there has never been a lack of criminal evidence, only an interest in exposing and prosecuting Hunter Biden’s corrupt practices

Bitcoin falls after jobs report but crypto prices show relative

Bitcoin falls after jobs report, but crypto prices show relative stability –

Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg via Getty Images

The crypto market fell with shares after the much-anticipated jobs report showed the job market is still tight and could keep the Federal Reserve on course to aggressively raise rates.

Bitcoin’s price fell 3.3% to $19,380.74, according to Coin Metrics. Ether fell 2.7% to $1,322.40.

On Friday, the Labor Department reported that the US economy added 263k jobs in September compared to the Dow Jones estimate of 275k and that the unemployment rate fell to 3.5% from 3.7% the previous month.

“The job report suggests there is no sign of a change in sentiment for the Fed, so we expect interest rates to stay fixed, which is also adding pressure on crypto markets,” said Yung-Yu Ma, chief investment strategist at BMO Wealth Management.

The correlation of cryptocurrencies with stocks has weakened over the past few weeks but remains high.

“Crypto seems to be at a key technical point here where it looks like it’s trying to carve out a bottom but is feeling heavy,” he added. “I still think it’s most likely to break to the downside given rising interest rates and risk-off sentiment, but so far it’s a surprise attempt to hold the line.”

The market was in a good news is bad news hold, with the Federal Reserve’s laser focused on cutting inflation. While the new data shows strength in the US economy, it could make the Fed more likely to continue its aggressive rate hike plan (while investors hope for a pause or a pivot), putting pressure on stocks and weighing on crypto.

“Crypto has been the hardest hit by rate hike fears this year,” said Callie Cox, US investment analyst at eToro. “It makes sense — many crypto projects don’t have cash flows, so people are investing in them for what they could be, not necessarily for the value they currently offer. When interest rates rise, the future value of a dollar falls.”

Cox also highlighted the resilience of crypto assets in the second half of the year, noting that while stocks have made new lows as bond yields have risen, bitcoin and ether have not done the same. Bitcoin has traded in a tight range between $18,000 and $25,000 since falling to yearly lows in June.

“To me, that’s progress in this bear market,” Cox said. “Crypto prices may be telling us that interest rate fears may be at an inflection point. Crypto strength is also a good indicator of foaming in the market. It seems like the brutal growth sell-off has finally washed out any weak hands.”

“Bitcoin is also well below its highs,” she added. “But stability is a step in the right direction.”

The Phillies stun the Cardinals with a wild 9th inning

The Phillies stun the Cardinals with a wild 9th inning rally to open a wild card

ST. LOUIS – Jean Segura’s career spanned 11 seasons and 1,328 games before finally reaching the postseason, the longest active streak in the major leagues. On the morning of his first playoff game, the Philadelphia Phillies second baseman barely slept. He woke up at 7am “with adrenaline pumping”. Friday lasted, and that lead never went away.

“I was mentally focused on every game, every pitch,” Segura said. “I’m prepared today to play a game and be able to be here – just thank God it was all on my side.”

With the Phillies going one run, bases loaded, one up in ninth place and the St. Louis Cardinals struggling to close in on their wounded replacements, Segura sneaked a grounder past a slightly pocketed infield, overshot two runs and propelled the Phillies to an unlikely 6-3 win in the opening game of their best-of-three wildcard series, putting them close to promotion to the National League Division Series.

The Cardinals, aided by a stellar performance from Jose Quintana and an electrifying pinch-hit homer from Juan Yepez, led 2-0 into the final inning and had every reason to believe they were headed for a Game 1 win. They were at home, in front of a packed Busch Stadium in a frenzy, and their lights out man, Ryan Helsley, was on the hill.

2 relatives

What followed was strained gullibility.

The Cardinals were 93-0 in postseason history as they led by several runs when entering the ninth inning. The Phillies, on the other hand, were 0-54 in the same situation in the regular season. They ended up scoring six goals — the most by a team that finished behind ninth in postseason history. None of their runs came off with hard contact. Alec Bohm was knocked down with loaded bases, Brandon Marsh hit a chopper that ricocheted past Nolan Arenado’s glove, Kyle Schwarber produced a sacrifice fly and Bryson Stott brought in a run after Paul Goldschmidt made a diving play on his grounder, but too late threw home.

The biggest runs came off the bat from Segura, who lunged for a slider low and away from Andre Pallante and hit a four-hopper down the right that snuck through a sweeping Tommy Edman, who easily played at Segura’s pace. The Cardinals had a ground ball pitcher versus a ground ball hitter and got a grounder that could have produced a double play late in the game – but he was hit just a little too far to the right.

“That’s just how the inning went,” Arenado said. “It didn’t go our way.”

And it all appeared to stem from Helsley’s right middle finger, the one he pinched while rallying for a field game in the penultimate game of the regular season. Helsley threw a few pitches off the mound during Thursday’s practice, and while he admitted his finger felt a little stiff, he told the Cardinals he would be ready to finish games in the postseason.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol turned on Helsley with an on and an out in the eighth and watched as he quickly finished off Marsh and Schwarber. However, shortly after the start of the ninth inning, Marmol said Helsley “started losing feel of his pitches a little bit.”

Helsley, who emerged as one of the most dominant closers in the sport this season, began missing well outside the strike zone, eventually throwing just nine of his 23 pitches for strikes in the ninth. JT Realmuto contributed a single-out single, then Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos pulled back-to-back walks, the latter on seats that were either way up and in or way down and out. By this time, Cardinals Pallante and Jack Flaherty had been warming up in the bullpen. Bohm would be Helsley’s last batter – and Helsley hit him in the left shoulder with a 101 mph fastball.

After throwing a warm-up pitch far out, Helsley exited Busch Stadium and left Busch Stadium for imaging on his troublesome finger.

The Cardinals were 93-0 in postseason history as they led by several runs when entering the ninth inning. The Phillies, on the other hand, were 0-54 in the same situation in the regular season. Jeff Robertson/AP

He could be lost for the series.

“We’ve had guys coming up all year,” Marmol said. “If he goes down, someone else has to step up and do that job, so that’s part of it. No one will feel sorry for us, I tell you.”

Friday’s Top of the Ninth was the only baseball half-inning this season in which a team conceded at least six earned runs of three hits or fewer, with no extra base hits, according to ESPN Stats & Information Research. There have now been five games in postseason history in which a team leading by two runs or more after the eighth inning lost by two runs or more — and the Cardinals were involved in three of those. It was the first time the Phillies had hit six or more runs in a postseason inning.

You picked the perfect time.

“It was special,” said Zack Wheeler, who pitched 6⅓ innings against the Cardinals and left three batters before Jose Alvarado handed the two-run homer to Yepez.

“That was probably the most exciting inning I’ve ever been in,” Realmuto said of ninth place. “And it didn’t even take a big home run. The momentum was there for us and several guys jumped in when needed.”

In a nine-line paragraph, Jean-Luc Mélenchon bluntly explains his decision to vote against this text. THOMAS SAMSON / AFP

In 2014, the NGO, co-winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, could not count on Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s support when it was threatened with dissolution by Vladimir Putin. The Russian judiciary today ordered the seizure of Memorial’s offices in Moscow.

The pans are piling up for the leader of rebellious France. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, MEP at the time, spoke out clearly against a European Parliament resolution of 23 October 2014 denouncing the dissolution of the NGO Memorial in Russia. A vote by the original rebel that would have gone unnoticed had it not been so exhumed on Twitter.

During his tenure as MEP, Jean-Luc Mélenchon reported extensively on his votes during plenary sessions. From 20-23 October 2014, MEPs are invited to vote on a resolution tabled by five political groups (ECR, EPP, Verts/ALE, S&D, ALD) aimed at denouncing the dissolution of the NGO Memorial, launched by the Russian Foreign Agents Law.

In a nine-line paragraph, Jean-Luc Mélenchon bluntly explains his decision to vote against this text: “The resolution aims to condemn Russia. We find that when the EU is concerned about Russia’s non-compliance with international legal obligations, it is much less vigilant in other cases (editor’s note from Hungary)”. The Tribune even called the resolution a “tense text” aimed at “isolating Russia”. However, the resolution does not envisage sanctions against Lenin’s country, but rather an increase in European financial aid for Russian civil society.

“I don’t remember that event very well, but Jean-Luc Mélenchon had to vote against it to push the European institutions to their limits and confront them with their contradictions,” explains Le Figaro, an LFI MEP who remains anonymous would like and voted for dissolution. People often misinterpret the no vote, and then the context was different than today.”

In October 2014, the invasion of Ukraine had not yet taken place, but the authoritarian excesses of the Putin regime were already very present and the association, co-winner of the 2022 Nobel Prize, had paid the price for it. Founded in 1989 as part of a USSR policy of transparency, the organization is dedicated to remembering the crimes and repressions of the Soviet Union. Gradually, the NGO began to denounce the abuses of Vladimir Putin’s regime and fought for respect for human rights in Russia. In 2012, she was accused by the Kremlin of painting a bad image of the former USSR and not mentioning the “foreign agent” label in her publications. It was banned on Russian territory in 2016 before being officially liquidated in 2021.

On October 7, the Russian judiciary ordered the seizure of Memorial’s offices in Moscow. The premises of the NGO were turned into public property by the Tverskoy court. “Memorial had exposed its involvement in the rehabilitation of Nazi criminals, discrediting the authorities and creating a false image of the USSR,” Ria Novosti news agency said.
