Third day of strikes in Iran as shopkeepers held down their shutters in protest after the death of Kurdish girl Mahsa Amini in September’s custody by vice squads and the ensuing crackdown on demonstrations.

The Iranian judiciary is sealing off shops and businesses that are joining the strike, and the police are arresting protesters. The lockout has since expanded to 40 Iranian cities, including the capital. Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani accused the demonstrating Sharif University students of being “traitors”.

Meanwhile, the commander of Anzali police in the north of the country has been arrested in connection with the killing of 27-year-old Mehran Samak, who was killed by a bullet to the head on November 29 in the open street while celebrating his defeat by the Islamic Republic team against the USA at the World Cup in Qatar. This was announced by the Samak family’s lawyer, as reported by BBC Persia.

ATLANTA, Dec. 7 (Portal) – Democrat Raphael Warnock won re-election to the US Senate in a close runoff in Georgia on Tuesday, strengthening his party’s razor-thin majority by running against former Republican soccer star Herschel Walker.

Warnock’s predicted victory was close. With 99% of the votes counted, he led Walker with 50.8% to 49.2%, according to Edison Research.

The result cements Georgia as a battleground state sure to feature prominently in the 2024 presidential election. Democrats have won three Senate elections in the past two years in the former Republican stronghold, and Democratic President Joe Biden won the state in 2020.

“Let’s celebrate a bit on this mountain. Let’s dance because we deserve it. But tomorrow we’ll be back in the valley to work,” Warnock, a Baptist minister, told a crowd of supporters.

Walker’s defeat is also a setback for Donald Trump in his quest for the Republican nomination to run for the White House again in 2024. The former president backed Walker and dozens of other high-profile Republicans in this year’s midterm elections, but had mixed results in the most competitive races.

Walker’s campaign was plagued by bitter allegations. A staunch pro-abortion advocate, he was also plagued by reports that he had paid for several ex-girlfriends to have abortions, allegations he denied.

Warnock highlighted these issues in campaign appearances and in a spate of television commercials that made the race the most expensive of the 2022 mid-term season at more than $400 million.

Democrats are extending their narrow majority in the US Senate by one vote. Against Warnock, a 53-year-old black pastor, the Republicans sent former black football star Walker into the race.

State election law made second round necessary

Warnock and Walker ran against each other again in the second round after both candidates received just under 50 percent of the vote in their first attempt in early November. According to the federal state electoral law, a second round was therefore necessary.

The Georgia campaign drew a lot of attention. Well-known politicians from both parties intervened because of their marked importance to the power structure in the Senate. Against Warnock, a 53-year-old black pastor, the Republicans put former black football star Walker in the running. The 60-year-old has won support from Trump during the campaign but has come under fire from two women who accused Walker of pressuring them to have abortions after having affairs with him. This is also piquant because Walker came off as a strict anti-abortion opponent. He denies the accusations.

Biden did not show up in Georgia

Biden was not seen in Georgia on the campaign trail before the runoff – with his low popularity ratings, an appearance by his party friend would likely have been political ballast for Warnock. Instead, popular Democratic former President Barack Obama came to Georgia, which has a higher proportion of black voters than many other states.

Republican Walker received support from Trump again shortly before the election. However, Trump also refrained from a joint campaign appearance ahead of the runoff — and instead announced Walker at a digital event on Monday night (local time).

Trump announced three weeks ago that he would run again as a Republican presidential candidate in 2024.
