Residents in Montreal’s Lachine neighborhood, discouraged by their neighbors, are asking police to evacuate the “ghetto” on Rue Camille where a woman was stabbed on Saturday.

“Except for a few patrols, nothing is being done to improve the situation. It’s now the case that a single block of flats can terrorize an entire street,” deplores Marilyne, a resident of Rue Camille.

This mother, who has asked that her last name be kept secret, is thinking about her three children, the eldest of whom will start school down the street in September.

“My partner and I are starting to feel insecure. It’s a shame because I’ve lived in the Saint-Pierre district for more than 20 years and it was a very peaceful place before that,” she laments.

Almost every week the police are called to intervene in the same building, says Marilyne. Working from home, she often sees police cars driving by her street.

The drop too much

A 30-year-old woman was stabbed to death in her home around 11 a.m. on Saturday. Later in the day, police arrested a 47-year-old suspect known to their services.

This incident appears to be the final straw for area residents who are urging the city to get rid of the “ghetto.”

“It’s sad, but it doesn’t surprise me. I lived in Rue Camille from 2015 to 2016 and unfortunately not much has changed since then. It’s a very disadvantaged area,” stresses Vanny Ranger-Tremblay in an interview with Le Journal.

A quick search of social networks is enough to find at least ten violent events that have happened on this street in recent years. At least four people have been victims of knife attacks there since 2020, most recently on Saturday.

Just over a week before the conclusion of two months in government, as the country finds itself in a state of permanent and unsustainable social upheaval, President Dina Boluarte made two announcements this Sunday trying to calm the fire of protests against her : the advance of the elections for this year and the long-awaited amendment of the 1993 Constitution. Boluarte asked the Congress of the Republic to reconsider the further development of the general elections, to be voted on this Monday. “Congressmen, you must be aware of your historical responsibilities. Tomorrow they will have the opportunity to earn the country’s trust and meet this demand so awaited by the Peruvian people. Let’s say to all of Peru with the utmost responsibility: we’re all going.”

The President also stressed that if the Chamber ignores her request, she has a plan b. He will promptly submit a proposal on behalf of the Executive. “This regulatory proposal responds to an urgent need to improve the democratic legitimacy of the country’s political representation. A situation that allows the population to put their main demands on the national political agenda institutionally and not through violence,” he said.

In order to be able to hold the elections in October, the term of office of the president would have to be shortened, as would that of the congressmen and representatives of the Andean parliament. “The first round should take place on the second Sunday in October and the second round in December,” he added. This Sunday’s announcement comes a day after the first protester was killed by police fire in the capital Lima, although 58 people have died since the crisis began last December.

But the advance wasn’t the only big announcement of the evening. Dina Boluarte, the first woman to cross the presidential ribbon, succeeding Pedro Castillo after his frustrated self-coup, announced a second proposal that would have been unimaginable just a few weeks ago: the total reform of the 1993 constitution, promulgated during the Government of Alberto Fujimori. “It aims to settle the debate on constitutional reform once and for all. A topic constantly used by some political forces to undermine any democratic solution to the current situation.”

The President said that the task of the Constitutional Commission would be transferred to the next Congress. “This law fits perfectly with the expectations of another sector of Congress that also wants to enact political reforms through a constituent assembly. There would be no more excuses for this to happen in 2023,” he explained. The initiative, he said, would be put to a referendum and “all the institutions will be able to put forward their contribution to shaping this reform.”

Recently designated a seven bedroom, six bathroom home in California’s Central Valley, the Fawcett House is perfect for those who enjoy indoor/outdoor living.

“We no longer have an outside and an inside as two separate things. Now the outside can come in, and the inside can and will go outside,” the famed architect said of the home, according to the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.

The house is located in California’s Central Valley

The home, located 120 miles southeast of San Francisco, is one of many designed by the architect, whose designs have been praised for their open and light concepts.

Other properties designed by Wright have sold for as little as $725,000, with a property currently listed for $7.95 million.

Los Banos home sits on 76 acres in the Central Valley and received the 2019 California Preservation Design Award for Restoration.

However, it almost didn’t come to fruition.

After the property’s owner, Buck Fawcett, proposed the site to Wright, the architect said he didn’t want to do it: “Not much beauty there.”

“In fact, Mr. Wright, the Central Valley of California contains some of the most fertile farmland in the world, and you should consider it an honor to build a home there,” Fawcett replied.

Wright’s interest was piqued, and it eventually became one of the few open-site homes the architect designed during his lifetime.

The house almost didn’t happen, as Wright originally said he didn’t see “a lot of beauty” there.

“In fact, Mr. Wright, the Central Valley of California contains some of the most fertile farmland in the world, and you should consider it an honor to build a home there,” the landowner said

The stunning home is also considered one of the finest examples of Wright’s signature “Usonian” home.

The term refers to about sixty middle-income homes designed by Wright.

Usonian homes are typically smaller, often single-story buildings with no garage.

They are usually L-shaped to fit around a garden patio and rely on solar heating and natural cooling, meaning more windows and doors.

“A strong visual connection between the interior and exterior spaces is an important feature of all Usonian homes,” states the California Preservation Foundation.

That was the intention, according to the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.

“They belong to each other. Form and function thus become one in design and execution when the nature of the materials and the method and purpose are in harmony,” said Wright.

The images clearly show the abundance of natural light that the home sees through the multitude of windows.

The house has large open spaces and long narrow ones, all surrounded by light.

The 1955 construction caught the attention of a few social media users, who were drawn to the beauty of the house as well as the sheer number of windows.

“So if I buy this house, do I have to stop throwing stones?” one person joked.

“I love everything about it but someone else needs to clean all those windows and glass doors!” commented one.
