Lisbon — According to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO), a third (32.8%) of prisoners in Europe have mental health problems. This is currently the biggest health problem in correctional facilities. According to the researchers, the numbers could be underestimated because fewer than half of the 36 countries analyzed reported all the data. They also point out that suicide is the leading cause of death behind bars, at a rate much higher than the overall average.

The same study, with information from 2020, indicates that there are 613,500 people in prison in Europe, a number 6.6% lower than the year before. However, one in five of the countries surveyed by the WHO reported that prisons are overcrowded, with serious consequences for the health of inmates. The researchers suggest that part of this problem in prisons could be solved by alternative measures, such as different treatments for drug users.

In addition to overcrowding, the survey found shortcomings in prison preventive services, including access to vaccinations: 16.7% of countries do not provide vaccinations for hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough. In terms of prevention against Covid19, the result was rated as good. “Prison should never become a punishment for a poor health care system. All citizens are entitled to good health care, regardless of their legal status,” said Dr. Hans Henri Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

The Xray image of European prisons will be presented this Wednesday (02/15) in Lisbon. According to the Portuguese Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro, “health policy must leave no one behind”. He informs that in his country in particular, the occupancy of prisons has increased by 114% compared to 2019, d new coronavirus pandemic. Despite this, there was no increase in crime. Portugal is considered the sixth safest country in the world.
