Europe 1 with AFP 3:41 p.m. 20 August 2022Two people were shot in a shopping center in Malmo, Sweden, on Friday evening. One of them died moments later and could well have been the original target of the attack. A 15-year-old boy suspected of being behind the shooting was arrested this Saturday.

Two people were injured in a late-afternoon shootout at a shopping center in Malmo, southern Sweden, on Friday night, police told AFP. One of them died moments later. The police regarded the attack as an “individual case in connection with criminal circles” and ruled out a terrorist motivation.

This Saturday, the city police announced that the deceased man was the target of the attack. “Currently everything indicates that this man was the target of this execution,” Malmo Police Chief Petra Stenkula said at a press conference.

15-year-old boy arrested

The other person who was injured in this shooting is a woman who is currently being hospitalized in serious condition. It would be a collateral sacrifice. A 15-year-old boy was arrested on Friday on suspicion of the shooting.

“Shooting in a shopping center is terribly reckless, with complete disregard for the lives of others,” Social Democrat Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Saturday afternoon during a press conference and a visit to Malmo as part of his election campaign. With just a few weeks to go before the elections in Sweden, crime has become one of the leading issues in the national debate.
