– At the moment of the emergency landing, the aircraft (a C-212 Aviocar) landed on the grass surrounding the runway. On board was only the pilot, who was treated in hospital with a few injuries. Absent, however, was 23-year-old co-pilot Charles Hew Crooks, whose body was found in a garden of a home in Fuquay-Varina.
The investigations
– It is still not clear how and why the young man fell or jumped before landing, since he did not have a parachute with him. The case is under investigation by federal agencies and the National Transportation Safety Board, a US government agency investigating accidents in the civilian transportation system.
