No progress on national dialogue in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, April 6 (Prensa Latina) The National Dialogue convened by the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, to discuss various reform proposals in the country continues today without any significant progress.

The bone of contention in the process is the constitutional reform project, which is meeting with a lot of opposition, but the other initiatives in the hands of the Economic and Social Council do not appear to be very popular either.

With regard to the reform of Magna Carta, the opposition parties opposed it and decided not to participate, considering it unnecessary in these moments of crisis.

While the government insists on speeding up the discussion, the above organizations remain adamant that they will not accept an amendment to the constitution as it is not a priority, recommending instead that the country’s key authorities focus on tackling the virus focus on inflation. The executive stated that it intends to bring the proposal back to the thematic table and that it will do so “with or without the other parties present,” we shall see.

On the other hand, there is the project on the electoral regime, which, with the presentation of the projects to amend the Law on Political Parties, Groups and Movements and the Organic Law of the Electoral Regime the day before in the Senate, the Central Electoral Board practically gave him a kick in the table, there will be nothing to agree on.

After this action by the board, party spokesmen questioned the maintenance of the discussion tables and it will be necessary to see how their development will develop from now on.

However, Abinader said earlier this month that he was ready to sit down and speak to the leaders of the parties, stressing that he was not seeking a “political” advantage with the changes, particularly the constitutional one, but rather one that would benefit the country’s institutions “strengthen”.

On August 18, in a speech from the National Palace, the President convened a national dialogue to learn more about 12 reforms, later expanded to 16 to improve “the state institutions and functioning” in the country, but later about eight months seem to pass with time.
