“We have a long history and we continue to grow, but these international games are crucial,” NFL manager Peter O’Reilly told AP. “Those who have been there and experienced it just see the passion of the fans in these markets. This is their chance to experience the best of the NFL live, and it’s a year-round opportunity to connect with fans there. There’s nothing bigger and better than an NFL game and these teams that are there in these markets and hosting it in a stadium.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Munich in the NFL’s first regular season game this season in Germany. The target cities for the 2023 Games will be announced later this year. The Chiefs and Patriots are part of the league’s international home marketing program, in which teams secure international marketing rights in countries outside the United States, with both sides having been granted rights in Germany.

The Patriots are 3-0 in international games.

“We’re thrilled to play in Germany this year,” said Robert Kraft, Patriots chairman and CEO. “We are unbeaten in our three international matches so far, also thanks to the excellent support from our fans. We know that some of our most passionate fans live in Germany and we’re looking forward to finally playing a game there. We know the fans.” will create a great atmosphere. We are sure it will be an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of the 2023 season.”

The NFL’s expansion to 17 regular season games gives teams a ninth home game in alternating seasons. Up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams qualify for the ninth home game of the regular season are selected to an international game at a neutral venue each year.

The league continues to explore playing more international games in the future and even the possibility of placing a franchise abroad.

“Nothing is imminent,” said O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president, club business, major events and international. “There are certainly difficulties to overcome if you want to have a team in Europe. It is our responsibility to continue to search and see what can be done. The fact that we are having this conversation is the capacity that is there in these markets. We have great stadiums, good government partners. These are building blocks, but it’s a complex process that takes time and coordination, but it’s our responsibility to do the work and analysis.
