Manuel Neuer announced this Wednesday that he has skin cancer. The goalkeeper and captain of FC Bayern Munich and the German national team revealed it in a press release on the launch of his brand of sunscreen and skin care products. which he created together with tennis player Angelique Kerber. The goalkeeper has admitted he has had three surgeries.
No details are known about the date of the illness, although German media point out that there were already some rumors when he was spotted with a band-aid in the game against Borussia Dortmund in December 2021, among others.
The aim of the two athletes is, in addition to promoting their product, to call for protection from the sun. “We both share very personal stories about skin conditions. for Angelique [Kerber] it’s sun-induced hyperpigmentation and in my case skin cancer on my face, which had to be operated on three times,” confirms Neuer.
According to the daily newspaper Bild Surgical interventions do not prevent him from continuing to practice his profession. Neuer has yet to reappear in the Bayern goal but his absence is entirely due to shoulder problems. The goalkeeper could return to the pitch when the German champions visit Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga next Saturday.
If nothing goes wrong, the 36-year-old goalkeeper will arrive in fine form for the World Cup in Qatar, where he will contest his fourth World Cup and look to repeat the success of 2014 when the side clinched the title after losing to Brazil in the semi-finals a historic (1:7) and Argentina (1:0) in the final.
