FOCUS – While talks have been going on for several months, the recent upsurge in violence risks undermining the fragile peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

For more than thirty years it has been an inflammatory region like a powder keg. On August 3, Azerbaijan claimed control of several positions and destroyed Armenian targets in Nagorno-Karabakh, in an escalation that left at least three dead and reignited the threat of a major war.

Located in Azerbaijan and close to Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous enclave disputed by the two South Caucasus states. Torn between armed conflict, immediately flouted ceasefires and foreign intervention, the region is once again under attack.

This area of ​​4400 m2, populated mainly by Armenians and sharing the language, culture and religion of neighboring Armenia, is disputed by Azerbaijan, who was entrusted with the enclave by Stalin in 1921.
