Morocco: French woman dies after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs

The unnamed 44-year-old French tourist left her hotel and was attacked by a pack of stray dogs.

A French tourist died Tuesday of her injuries after being bitten by stray dogs at a seaside resort in western Sahara in southern Morocco, local authorities said on Wednesday.

The 44-year-old victim, whose identity has not been released, was attacked by a pack of stray dogs as she walked away from her hotel in the town of El Argoub, the same sources have said.

An open investigation

According to initial reports, the Frenchman had arrived on Tuesday in El Argoub, a seaside resort known for kitesurfing on the edge of the Atlantic, 70 km from Dakhla, the capital of Oued Eddahab province, a region of Western Sahara under Moroccan control.

The gendarmerie, under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office, has opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of this incident, local authorities added.

The proliferation of stray dogs is a real scourge in the Maghreb. The Moroccan state signed an agreement with partners in 2019 “to sterilize, vaccinate and identify stray dogs”.
