Morocco announces closer ties with Israel

The delegations agreed to expand cooperation, extending it to areas such as intelligence, air defense and electronic warfare, says part of the Moroccan army, the outcome of the first meeting of the Tel Aviv-Rabat Cooperation Monitoring Committee.

Israel and Morocco normalized their diplomatic relations in December 2020 as part of the so-called Abraham Plan, under which some Arab countries established ties with Tel Aviv.

The injunction between the two countries adds another explosive element to the clash between Morocco and Algeria, which supports the Palestinians in their demands for a state of their own, and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which is fighting against the Moroccan military occupation of its territory.

It is also telling that the announcement follows the rise to power in Israel of a government seen as the most right-wing and aggressive in its history, after a far-right coalition led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won parliamentary elections last November. mgt/msl
