Montreal police officers targeted

A madman opened fire on police in Montreal Sunday morning without causing injuries.

Patrol officers were first called to a single-family home on Rue Saint-Zotique near 26th Avenue in the Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie neighborhood at around 6:40 a.m. after a call signaled a man in crisis.

“When the police arrived at the scene, the man opened fire in their direction,” said Véronique Dubuc, spokeswoman for the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

A 75-year-old “family member” was also in the home at the time of the incident.

According to our information, the suspect used an Uzi submachine gun. The gun reportedly jammed, allowing police to subdue the individual and arrest him without bloodshed.

Nobody was injured during the event.

SPVM Director Fady Dagher personally went to Neighborhood Station 38 on Sunday to meet the police officers involved.

In an internal statement, the chief of police underlined the “coolness” of the officers during this operation.

“[…] They were able to make the arrest without hurting anyone […]. It’s also important for me to tell you that you probably saved the life of a person in the apartment where the procedure took place. I can’t find the words to tell you how proud I am of the work that’s been done.”

The suspect, a 43-year-old man, has previous convictions for various offenses, the nature of which has not been specified, the spokesman said.

The suspect is said to be met by investigators later in the day. An investigation was also launched at the home to find out more about what led to this new incident of armed violence.
