The accident happened around 1:15 p.m. on Highway 15 southbound, near the small community near Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

For reasons that are still unknown, the driver lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway. The car then crashed into trees and burst into flames.

“Unfortunately, the driver became stuck in the vehicle and his death was pronounced immediately,” said Stéphane Tremblay, spokesman for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The local fire brigade arrived on site, but could not free the driver from his precarious position in time.

SQ collision patrol officers will be combing the scene of the accident to better understand the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The police did not provide any information about the victim at the beginning of Tuesday evening.

However, according to SQ, no other vehicle would be involved in the exit from the road.
