Media concentration affects democracy says Atilio Boron

MEPs reject the constitutional accusation against Chilean Minister

The accusatory slander received 76 votes against, six abstentions and 68 in favour, a far cry from the 78 required to enter the Senate.

Secretary General of the Presidency Ana Lya Uriarte thanked all those who spoke out against an unfair accusation.

This is a tool to prosecute authorities when they break the rule of law, and in this case there was no legal basis, Uriarte said.

Communist Party MP Karol Cariola called for the right to understand that constitutional allegations, unless they are unfounded, are not the way to oppose the government.

“Reason has triumphed over unfounded and malicious action by the right. We hope that now they will stop worrying about devoting their time and effort to work for Chile,” wrote the Communist Youth on its Twitter account.

The Republican Party accused Jackson of violating the law on matters related to the purchase of land for Indigenous peoples, which is not within the minister’s power, and of malfunctioning local children’s services, something that has dragged on for years and lasted little more than four months in office.
