“The group still has $200 million left,” recalled Jérémie Longpré, an attorney at Kugler Kandestin, one of the law firms that filed a class action lawsuit against Desjardins.

The lawyer wants to encourage the many victims to claim their compensation.

“The claims portal is very well made and very simple. It’s really worth it because it only takes a few minutes to file the complaint and ask about it,” he says.

Since July, people who have received a decision from Desjardins can already assert their claim.

But since October 18, all those affected can claim damages directly online. Remember that more than 9 million Desjardins members or customers have been affected by the leak of personal data.

No document requested

The banking cooperative agreed to pay its customers and members more than $200 million in compensation in an out-of-court settlement approved by the Quebec Supreme Court in June.

Claimants can claim up to $90 for lost time. No documentation requested. You have until April 20, 2023 to apply. Payment to members will be made according to the Desjardins Regulation website before July 19, 2023.

In the event of identity theft, compensation of US$1,000 may also be sought. In this specific case, documents proving the situation are required and the claim period is October 2025.

Members also have access to the Equifax monitoring service at Desjardins’ expense for a period of five years. You can apply until October 20, 2023.

A very simple process

Step 1

Two clicks and here we are in the compensation form. After filling in very basic personal information – first name, last name, address, email and phone number – the options for complaints will be offered. You can get up to $90 for wasted time without proof or $1,000 for identity theft, this time with proof.

2nd step

If the Lost Time option is selected, the plaintiff is entitled to $18 per hour lost, up to a maximum of $90. Reaching the maximum amount is quite simple. We’ll add the different already predefined actions from a scrolling list: register with Equifax, search for information, etc. Add a brief description and the time allotted for the task. It’s complete.

step 3

By selecting the “Identity theft” option, the portal clearly explains for which cases the online complaint is accepted. Here, more details must be provided to receive $1000: the date of the identity theft, a description, and documents proving the facts. But if this is your case, the process remains quick and easy.

step 4

The process ends with the choice of payment method: by check or Interac bank transfer. The process was completed smoothly within a few minutes. A phone line is available if needed. An email and confirmation number will be sent for tracking.
