The construction of the two private mini-hospitals promised by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) will happen “quickly”, Mr Legault told him.

These private facilities, where care would be paid for by health insurance like in a public hospital, will emerge in eastern Montreal and Quebec. Giving more space to the private healthcare sector “is a point of convergence that our party has with the CAQ,” stressed Éric Duhaime on Tuesday.

However, he tried in vain to persuade Mr. Legault to reconsider his decision to end hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation. “We are not necessarily against the construction of new dams, but in the short term natural gas must be extracted,” he said.

Mr Legault said he intended to meet him “regularly” even though his party was not represented in the National Assembly. The prime minister will take turns meeting with the leaders of the opposition parties this week.
