Golfer Mark Hubbard delivered a hole-in-one in the first round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but in an ace he was sure he missed when he hit it with his club.

Hubbard entered the 11th hole on Thursday on the North Course at Detroit Country Club with a par under 11.

He had hole-in-ones eight times prior to the event, but he wasn’t sure about this shot. According to the PGA Tour website, Hubbard even dropped his racquet on purpose after sending the ball toward the green.

“This is embarrassing,” Hubbard said as he turned to his caddy.

But when Hubbard turned, he saw that the ball was headed straight for the pin.

“Dude, this better not go in,” said Wyndham Clark, one of Hubbard’s playmates, as he watched the ball.

Hubbard had made a hole-in-one in a result that surprised him.

A playing partner told Hubbard he would not give him a high five. Another jokingly said: “That doesn’t count. You can’t drop your bat.”

Hubbard spoke to reporters about the hole-in-one after his round of 68.

“I mean, frankly, it was pretty embarrassing,” Hubbard said. “I didn’t know exactly where the ball went today. I took a week off and whatever, I just didn’t feel quite right and I think I let go of the racquet on about three of the last four shots as well and they all turned out fine.”

“I felt really stuck and thought it was going to be right on the green,” he continued. “I looked up and it was a perfect one-yard draw… It landed and trickled in like a putt.”
