A man who was shot dead by police officers in the Briny Avenue area of Pompano Beach, Florida last week died Tuesday.
The deceased, identified as Joseph Francis, a marine engineer by trade and originally from Rhode Island, died a week after a Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) agent shot him in Pompano Beach, according to a statement from Local 10 News.
According to the BSO, the body of Joseph Francis was transferred Tuesday from the hospital, where it was in critical condition, to the Broward County medical examiner’s office.
The shooting that killed Francis occurred late at night on January 10 in the 600 Briny Ave area.
Tonight, Broward officers shot the manwho drew a gun and attacked at least one of the officers.
Officials had responded to a report of ongoing crime in the area.
At the scene, the man pulled out a gun and attacked an officer, after which agents fired shots that killed him, according to the preliminary report from authorities.
“I thought it was fireworks. They’re always shooting fireworks here,” a neighborhood resident told Local 10 News.
The person was taken to hospital in critical condition while a firearm was recovered from the ground.
A friend of the deceased said it was a case of “being in the wrong place at the wrong time” as Francis had no motive to commit a crime.
