Man interrupted by ‘weird’ noise while jogging on beach

A resident of San Francisco, California, was going for a jog on the beach and encountered an unfamiliar noise halfway down. In an attempt to identify it, he concluded what it was. Report extracted from The Dodo portal.

“He heard a muffled bark but there was no one around,” animal welfare officer Carlos Ortega told The Dodo.

By evaluating the rocks of the cliffs, the man began his search for who was responsible for the noise. After some time of searching he found a small face among the stones that would not stop staring at him.

The man then immediately contacted a local animal protection center to report the find. The facility’s control officer, Carlos Ortega, made his way to the beach as soon as he found out about it.

“She really didn’t have a lot of time to be in that situation without something hurting her,” Ortega said. “The tide came in, so I had to work fast.”

Although the man left the crime scene before the animal welfare team showed up, he had left all the information on how to find the small animal among the rocks.

“I started looking at all the rocks on the cliff, trying to match the pattern of the rocks in the photo to what I was seeing in front of me,” Ortega said. “But the whole area looked exactly like the picture.”

After 15 minutes of probing, the pup named Gwen was found by the team.

“I looked down and saw Gwen looking at me,” Ortega said. “She was shaking, but she didn’t beep. Not a single sound.”

In order not to hurt the animal, Ortega removed a top rock and pushed it down the cliff.

“I reached down and petted her,” Ortega said. “She stopped shaking for a second and came closer to me as I stroked her. That was a good sign.”

Ortega eventually gained Gwen’s trust and removed her from the stones. When they saw that she was unharmed, they took a beautiful selfie to capture the rescue.

“She was cool and calm,” Ortega said. “She just snuggled up to me.”

After scanning the animal’s microchip, Gwen’s family was located within minutes. Ortega learned of the family’s search for the animal a few hours after their escape in the morning. Then he took her to her true home.

In the face of his family members, the little animal ran excited and happy that his rescue was successful.

“The only way a rescue like this can happen is through a team effort and the help of the public,” Ortega said. “Because the runner was able to provide us with such pertinent information and the dispatchers asked the right questions, we found her just in time.”

“If you come to work every day, you have the potential to change someone’s life,” Ortega said. “In this case, it was Gwen and her family.”
