In 2006, the Material Girl singer co-founded the non-profit organization Raising Malawi.

In line with the charity’s mission statement, Raising Malawi is dedicated to helping alleviate the extreme poverty and hardship affecting Malawi’s one million orphaned children, primarily through health and education programs.

In 2008 she released the documentary I Am Because We Are, a film that documents the lives of orphans in Malawi, where around 500,000 children have lost their parents to HIV and AIDS.

The film was written, narrated, and produced by Madonna herself through her production company, Semtex Films.
