UNITED STATES – Another shooting in the United States. In Monterey Park near Los Angeles, a shootout on the evening of January 21 claimed around ten victims, according to initial information from the local press. This region is home to a strong Asian community.

According to the BBC, it was around 10 p.m. (7 a.m. in France) when the first shots rang out. Earlier in the day, thousands of people gathered across town for the Monterey Park Lunar New Year Festival to celebrate Chinese New Year. The two-day celebrations are among the largest in Southern California.

According to the Los Angeles Times, filming took place on Garvey Avenue, where the celebrations took place. A man who owns a restaurant testified to the local newspaper. He explains that three people entered his shop and told him to lock the door because a man with a semi-automatic weapon was nearby.

AFP journalists saw a heavy police presence at the scene and access to the locations overflown by helicopters was banned. A Washington Post journalist who was able to speak to the police wrote on Twitter that nine people were injured, but that there was no clear information about the fatalities.
