Los Angeles, Catholic Bishop David O’Connell killed: shot dead

Shock in Los Angeles, Catholic auxiliary bishop there David O’Connellnicknamed “Friedensstifter” (the “Peacemaker”), was killed with one shot. Police responded to a 911 call at 1 a.m in the Hacienda Heights neighborhood and found the prelate dead in a house a few blocks from the Catholic Church St John Vianney. The agents are investigating murder.

Who was David O’Connell O’Connell, 69, has been a priest for 45 years and was originally from Ireland. In 2015, Pope Francis appointed him one of the auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the largest in the United States.

The commitment to peace O’Connell worked in south Los Angeles for years, focusing on fighting gangs. He later tried to mediate between local residents and law enforcement agencies after the violent riot of 1992, after a jury acquitted four white Los Angeles police officers of caning Rodney King, an African American man.
