London blocks Scottish gender law

London government vetoes Scottish gender reassignment law Edinburgh is outraged. Whether the dispute will fuel Scotland’s independence campaign remains questionable.

It is an unprecedented intervention by the UK government. On Tuesday, she announced that she would block legislation already passed by the Scottish government. It is gender reform that makes it easier for trans people to change their official gender. In December, the Edinburgh Parliament voted in favor of the reform by a large majority.

The British government says the reform cannot be reconciled with the Equality Act, which applies across Britain. So, she vetoed it. It is the first time that she decides to take this step. In doing so, she has once again provoked a constitutional dispute – and the Scottish government is furious.
