Jô Soares, host of “Programa do Jô”, shown on TV Globo from 2000 to 2016, has been hospitalized since July 28 at the SírioLibanês Hospital in the central region of São Paulo.

The funeral and wake will be reserved for family and friends at a date and location not yet announced. The cause of death was not disclosed. The death notice was made by Flávia Pedra, Jô’s exwife, and confirmed in a statement from the press office of SírioLibanês Hospital.

José Eugênio Soares was born on January 16, 1938 in Rio de Janeiro. He was the only child of Orlando Heitor Soares and Mercedes Leal Soares from Paraíba. At the age of 12 he went to study in Switzerland, where he stayed until he was 17 years old. It was there that he became interested in theater and shows.

Returning to Brazil, Jô Soares approached the theater and began a career that has always had humor as its trademark.

Considered a pioneer of standup, he was notable for being one of the most important comedians in the history of Brazil, taking part in attractions that made television history, such as “A Família Trapo” (1966), “Planeta dos Homens (1977) and Long Live the Fat One (1981). He has also written books and acted in 22 films.
