Lions roster cuts: Detroit waives backup QB David Blough and hopes to sign on practice team

While David Blough fielded the original 53-man Detroit Lions roster, the Detroit Lions have decided to forego the team’s backup quarterback. according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This comes just a day after Tim Boyle, the team’s other backup quarterback, was axed. That leaves Detroit with just one quarterback on the roster, starter Jared Goff.

Blough was originally brought to Detroit after the team traded for him in 2019. He’s served primarily as the No. 3 quarterback on the list since then. He ended up having to start five games for an injured Matthew Stafford in his rookie season, leading 5-0 in the process.

It seemed Blough might have won the backup job over Boyle this year after leading the Lions to a late touchdown drive in the preseason Finals that included a brave play with an injured knee and a couple of clever passes. However, the Lions clearly plan to bring in outside help for the backup job.

TO UPDATE: The Lions are reportedly signing former 49ers quarterback Nate Sudfeld.

On Monday, coach Dan Campbell said it was a possibility should the Lions find a clear upgrade.

“I think the best way to answer is whoever is out there, you have to know it’s a clear upgrade from what’s already in that building would be the best way to say it,” said Campbell. “Because if it isn’t, why would you do it?”

That said after Adam Schefterthe Lions would like to bring Blough back into their training roster.
