“Quebec has a long history of hosting refugees and we are proud to do our part in this humanitarian duty. However, this influx cannot continue. Quebec’s absorption capacity is now largely exceeded,” the premier said.

difficult conditions

Mr Legault also highlights the increasingly difficult conditions faced by asylum seekers, many of whom “struggling with finding adequate housing and are more likely to find themselves in a situation of homelessness”.

He worries about equal breath for community organizations that are “out of breath”.

In addition to “the urgency to complete the renegotiation of the agreement on safe third countries with the United States” so that the rules are the same across the border, regardless of whether it is a regular or an irregular point of entry, François Legault put two more Justin Trudeau demands:

  • that Ottawa will continue to redirect all asylum seekers, whether they speak French or not, to other provinces, given the proportion of efforts Quebec has already made;
  • that Quebec will be reimbursed for all costs related to the reception and integration of asylum seekers for the years 2021 and 2022, a bill that amounts to “several hundred million dollars”.

strengthen

The Legault government has recently spoken out in a number of ways to ensure Ottawa is living up to its responsibility to end the flow of migrants seen on Roxham Road, which saw 39,000 irregular arrivals in the last year alone.

The issue has been even hotter since the New York Post revealed that New York City is offering bus tickets to migrants who want to travel to Roxham Road to enter Canada.

Adding to the numerous interventions by his Immigration Minister Christine Fréchette, François Legault suggested Justin Trudeau on Wednesday to broadcast a new tweet to urge migrants to stop taking Roxham Road.

He was referring to a tweet by Justin Trudeau published six years ago, in which he urged “those fleeing persecution, terror and war” to choose Canada as a place of refuge. For many, this tweet is the reason for the massive arrival of migrants on Roxham Road.

“Quebec’s opinion on its absorption capacity has never been requested by your government,” François Legault denounced in his letter to Justin Trudeau.

“Since autumn 2022 we have observed that arrivals continue to increase. […] This influx cannot stop. Quebec has now far exceeded its absorption capacity. »

“It’s essential […] that asylum seekers arriving irregularly will henceforth be diverted to other provinces because Quebec has made more than its fair share of efforts in recent years. »

“One day Roxham Road will have to be closed, whether we like it or not. […] I therefore ask you to make it a priority at your next meeting with the American President, Mr. Biden. »
