Lebanon’s Maronite League calls for speeding up presidential elections

In a statement, the group appealed to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to keep sessions open pending the appointment of the next head of state, after 11 parliamentary calls failed.

In this regard, the League called on the Supreme Judicial Council to fulfill its duty to restore normality in the institution following the serious contradictions following the return of Judge Tariq Al-Bitar to the archives of the Beirut port explosion on August 4, 2020.

The statement reaffirms the support of the Lebanese Army and all security agencies in their duties of maintaining stability on national soil.

The statement reiterated its support for ongoing investigations into corruption issues related to some of the country’s official departments and institutions.

According to the national independence pact from France in 1943 and the denominational system, the office of President of the Lebanese Republic falls to a representative of the Maronite Christian community.

Michel Aoun completed his term on October 31 and Lebanon is seeking to nominate its 14th president after independence, in the absence of a political consensus, a deepening economic crisis and under an interim government with limited constitutional powers.
