BEIRUT, 18th August (RHC) – Lebanon today released 75 baby turtles in the Tire Coast Nature Reserve in the southeast of the country after the end of the nesting and breeding season this year.

According to the Al-Akhbar website, reserve members, environmental activists, university students and a variety of citizens witnessed the release of the first group of turtles into the sea to help improve the quality of marine life.

Director of Scientific Programs Ali Badr El-Din confirmed that the coast of Tire provides a safe environment for turtles due to the basal presence of the loggerhead and green turtles, the latter in danger of extinction.

Likewise, the head of the committee, Hassan Dabouq, emphasized the adequate habitat of the reserve for the natural life cycle through the presence in a contamination-free area and a beach adapted to spawning needs.

The Tire Coast Nature Reserve includes a tourist, agricultural, archaeological and conservation area encompassing the Phoenician springs of Ras El Ain.

Due to its diverse flora and fauna, the area is an important nesting site for migratory birds and turtles, as well as a retreat for the Arabian spiny mouse and many other sea creatures and plants. (Source:PL)
