The US faces its biggest strike ever as 350,000 UPS workers are set to strike for better conditions

The US faces its biggest strike ever as 350,000 UPS workers will go on strike for better conditions, even though couriers are already making $95,000 a year.

UPS’s contract expires on July 31, 2023, and 350,000 of its 534,000 employees are expected to go on strike to demand better conditions.

Teamsters are calling for air conditioning in the back of trucks after several workers were injured or died due to hot conditions, better wage packages and benefits.

If workers are going on strike, it will be the first time since 1997, when workers demanded full-time jobs and the union wanted to retain control of the pension fund.

Labor experts suspect the unionized workers will go on strike sometime in the spring while the contract is being negotiated, and it will affect the whole country.

The 1997 strike lasted 15 days and affected 80 percent of shipments, causing UPS to lose $780 million, according to Parcel.

Now UPS controls around six percent of the country’s GDP, and as the pandemic explodes a new level of online retail business, the company has added 72,000 unionized jobs since 2020.

UPS moves around 21.5 million packages a day, according to CNN Business, and its rival companies — FedEx and Amazon — don’t have the same capacity to manage that many packages.

UPS said in a statement that it wants to reach a peaceful deal that “brings benefits to our employees and gives UPS the flexibility to remain competitive in a rapidly changing industry.”

“UPS and the Teamsters have worked together for nearly 100 years to meet the needs of UPS employees, customers and the communities in which we live and work. We believe we will continue to find common ground with the Teamsters and reach an agreement that is good for all parties involved,” the company said in a statement, according to CNN Business.

Tensions between the company and its employees have been rising since 2018 after the last contract was ratified by former Teamster President James Hoffa. The vote was held because not enough workers ratified the vote to trigger a strike, according to CNN Business.

Current President Sean O’Brien – who won office by prioritizing the UPS contract – has also reminded workers that there is a $300 million strike fund to cover payroll during the strike cover up.

“Do our members wake up every day wanting a strike? I would say no But are you fed up? Yeah, they’re fed up,” O’Brien told CNN Business. “Whether there is a strike or not is entirely up to the companies. We will use as much leverage as possible to get our members the contract they deserve.’

According to CNN Business, UPS drivers already make around $95,000 a year and receive an additional $50,000 in benefits. Truck drivers earn even more.

According to Youtuber Laos House, who works at the store, UPS’s starting salary is between $2 and $5 more than its competitors.

The average delivery driver makes around $95,000 at the company and the average salary is reportedly around $44,452. UPS pays a lot more than its competitors

The New Jersey mega-corporation reportedly starts at $22 an hour, compared to the lowest at $17 via FedEx Ground. The second highest is Amazon and the US Postal Service at $18 per hour, the second highest is FedEx Express at $20 per hour.

Reportedly, other airlines’ maximum hourly rates range from $6 to $14 an hour, and $38 in New Jersey.

According to Business Insider, the median salary is $44,254 at UPS, $29,007 at Amazon, and $49,059 at FedEx.

In addition, workers want air conditioning for the back of the truck, which can reach triple-digit temperatures in the summer — especially after several have been injured or even killed.

In early July, 24-year-old worker Esteban Chavez Jr., known as Stevie, was delivering packages when he suddenly collapsed while on shift in California.

Chavez’s family believe he died from the high temperatures.

“Everyone knows it’s pretty hot out there, these trucks are a hot box,” Chavez Sr said. “They have all these guys running around delivering packages and trying to meet their quotas and get their jobs done.”

The UPS driver had just turned 24 the day before his death and was returning to work after taking time off to heal from a shoulder injury.

“It is not a difficult task for the company to install an air conditioner. There’s a lot of heat stroke,” O’Brien told CNN

Brooklyn-based Teamster 804 President Vinnie Perrone told News 12 that “no action was taken” because of the heat-related incidents the team was facing.

“They’re basically just playing deaf,” Perrone said. “We still have concerns about the safety of our members inside and outside of the buildings.”

UPS CEO Carol Tome said the company’s contracts are competitive for the labor shortage and the company wants a “win-win” situation.

According to CNN Business, UPS also said it is preparing contingency plans in case workers go on strike.

Pakistan’s Lake Manchar has burst its banks as flooding worsens

SEHVAN, Pakistan — The retaining wall of Pakistan’s largest lake collapsed Tuesday after months of heavy rains, threatening hundreds more villages downstream and forcing thousands more from their homes.

Pakistan’s government carried out two deliberate breaches of Lake Manchar’s retaining wall over the weekend to relieve pressure on the structure, but an irrigation official told the Washington Post that the wall began to breach on Tuesday as water levels continued to rise.

A local Department of Agriculture official confirmed the breach but said it was unclear whether it was due to water pressure or whether residents of a nearby town damaged the wall to divert floodwaters away from their area.

Both officers spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

“It is not possible to repair the wall now,” the irrigation official said. He said the government was unable to protect villages in the flood path and he estimated families would have four to five hours to evacuate.

‘No one cares about us’: Pakistanis struggle to survive after floods

Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro confirmed to The Post the appearance of the new breach in the flood wall but claimed that no further evacuations were needed as all downstream settlements had already been evacuated.

The Pakistani government is already struggling to respond to what has been described as a “catastrophic” crisis, and the breaching of Lake Manchar is likely to make access to those in need even more difficult. Anger is mounting among displaced Pakistanis, hundreds of villages remain submerged, and those who have made it ashore are desperate for shelter and help.

Water from the lake flowed down highways and overflowing drainage canals north of Sehvan, threatening to cut off a vital supply route to some of the country’s hardest-hit villages in Dadu and beyond. Roads leading south were lined with peasants herding their livestock to safety.

The agriculture official said the government must act quickly to divert the water escaping Lake Manchar by creating additional fractures along the lake or digging more channels. If water is not diverted, the official warned, over 100,000 more people could be displaced.

The unprecedented flooding in Pakistan has killed more than 1,300 people and affected around 33 million people since it began in June. Government relief efforts are overwhelmed even as international supplies are beginning to enter the country.

The two-month-long floods in Sindh province far surpassed the devastating rains of 2010 – hitting twice as many districts – and have been described as the worst in the country’s history. Officials attribute the unusually heavy rains to climate change.

The floods also came as the country’s vast agricultural regions prepared for the harvest season. Cash crops of rice, cotton and vegetables have been swept away and the losses will cause untold hardship to the farmers who depend on these crops for income.

Russia is buying thousands of missiles and artillery from North Korea, US says

THE NEW YORK TIMES A Russia buys millions of artillery shells and rockets North KoreaThis is a sign, according to secret US intelligence agencies, that global sanctions have seriously restricted and coerced their supply chains Moscow turning to rogue states for military supplies.

The disclosure comes days after Russia received initial shipments of USmade drones. Will, which some US officials said had mechanical problems. U.S. government officials said Russia’s decision to approach Iran and North Korea was a sign that sanctions and export controls imposed by the United States and the U.S Europe hamper Moscow’s ability to resupply its army.

You United States provided few intelligence details, newly released classified information about the exact weapons, timing or size of the shipment, and there’s still no way to independently verify the sale. A US official said Russia intends to buy more North Korean equipment in the future, in addition to shortrange missiles and artillery shells.

Russian missiles fire across the Kharkiv sky; Moscow has been looking for alternative markets to meet its war equipment needs.Russian missiles fire across the Kharkiv sky; Moscow has been looking for alternative markets to meet its war equipment needs.

“The Kremlin should be concerned that they have to buy anything from North Korea,” said Mason Clark, who heads the Russian studies team at the Institute for the Study of War.

before invasion of Ukraine of Russia, the White House began releasing intelligence reports on Moscow’s military plans to the public first leaking this material to allies and then to the general public. After a lull in disclosures, the US government has again begun releasing information to highlight difficulties facing the Russian military, including recent findings about Iran’s drone purchases and the Russian army’s problems recruiting soldiers.

Extensive economic sanctions have not harmed Russia, at least so far. Soaring energy prices because of the invasion fed its coffers and allowed Moscow to mitigate the effects of its banks’ isolation from the international financial system and restrictions on exports and imports. Even sanctions against Russian oligarchs could not undermine the president’s power. Wladimir Putin.

But US officials said when it comes to Russia’s ability to rebuild its military, economic action by Europe and the United States has been effective. US and European sanctions have prevented Russia from buying weapons or electronics to make those weapons.

Moscow expects the China willing to circumvent these export controls and continue to supply the Russian military. But in recent days, US officials have said that while China is willing to buy Russian oil at a discount, Beijing, at least so far, has respected export controls aimed at Moscow’s military and has not attempted to sell military equipment or components.

Gina Raimondo, the Commerce Secretary, has repeatedly warned China that the United States could make these deals if Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, China’s largest computer chip maker, or other companies violate sanctions against Russia and deny them access to American technology, leading to what the Chinese do need to manufacture semiconductors.

Both Iran and North Korea are largely isolated from international trade thanks to US and international sanctions, meaning neither country has much to lose from deals with Russia. Any agreement to buy arms from North Korea would violate UN resolutions United Nations with the aim of curbing the proliferation of weapons in Pyongyang.

However, it is unclear how much the North Korean purchase has to do with export controls. There’s nothing hightech about a 152millimeter artillery rocket or a Katyushastyle rocket that North Korea makes, said Frederick W. Kagan, a military expert at the American Enterprise Institute.

A US official said the new deal with North Korea shows desperation in Moscow. And Kagan said the turn to North Korea was a sign that Russia appeared unable to produce the most basic materials needed for warfare.

“The only reason the Kremlin should buy artillery shells or missiles from North Korea or any other manufacturer is because Putin was unwilling or unable to mobilize the Russian economy for war, even at the most basic level.” said Kagan.

Limiting Russia’s military supply chain is a key part of the US strategy to weaken Moscow, aimed at hampering both its war effort in Ukraine and its future ability to threaten its neighbors.

For months, both Russian operations in Ukraine and US government revelations have made it clear that Moscow has serious problems with its hightech weapons. Precisionguided weapons such as cruise missiles have experienced high failure rates. In the early stages of the war, half or more of these weapons failed to fire or hit their targets.

Russian supplies of these precision weapons were also running out, forcing the generals to rely less on missiles and instead base their strategy on a brutal artillery strike that devastated cities in eastern Ukraine.

The revelation that Russia is striving for more artillery ammunition is a sign that Moscow’s supply problems run deeper than just highend components for highend tanks or precision missiles. As Russia seeks more artillery shells from North Korea, it faces or could soon face shortages, and its industrial base is struggling to meet the military demands of the war.

Continued after the ad

“This is likely an indication of a massive failure of the Russian militaryindustrial complex that is likely to have deep roots and very serious implications for the Russian armed forces,” Kagan said.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian ammunition depots. Ukrainian forces used the American High Mobility Rocket Artillery System (HIMARS) and US intelligence reports to attack behind the front lines and destroy ammunition dumps.

While the impact of this offensive on overall ammunition stockpiles is unclear, Russia was forced to retreat and relocate its ammunition stores, reducing the effectiveness of its artillery forces.

There was also evidence of the inefficiency of some Russian artillery shells, which would have been phased out due to storage problems or poor maintenance of their stockpiles of ammunition. In order to more effectively wound enemy troops, artillery shells exploded in midair just before hitting the ground. But the crater pattern created by the Russian artillery forces over the summer showed many of their shells exploding into the ground, reducing damage to Ukrainian trenches.

While the condition of North Korea’s artillery shells is unclear, the country has ample supplies of ammunition.

Wobbly Timatins

Wobbly Timatins |

It wasn’t in Quebec, I specify, I don’t want to find myself on the index at home.

Posted at 9:00 am

Split

It was a morning somewhere on earth. The stomach is hollow and groans.

I order two Timatins from the car, “Between two loaves of bread, with egg and cheese,” according to the French Academy. One with ham, the other with bacon.

I get everything, yes, ham and bacon, but those two sides alone between two slices of bagel, no eggs and no cheese… Stinky the Timatins.

Annoyed, the stomach lets go and is satisfied with it.

The day before I had ordered a tuna salad in a restaurant, which was served to me… without tuna!

A bad pass.

For the past year or two I’ve lived under tremendous stress at the thought of arriving after 8pm in the in-between capital of Drummondville and not being able to feed myself.

Of course, I still have that fluffy sandwich in a convenience store fridge, which makes me look desperate at not being able to seduce a customer as the only one of his promotion.

Every time I visit the supermarket, I also have the impression of being in the corridors of a secondary school, no matter how much the staff is visibly younger. Current average age in my opinion, secondary school 4.

And I’m a Ti uncle. I’ve been eating the same pizza from the same restaurant chain for decades. It comforts me, calms me, connects me to the ground and lets me travel in time, in the past. But my last experience with her traumatized me. She betrayed me, she didn’t taste the same anymore! It broke me. Like becoming an orphan.

I can’t explain if this disaster was the fate of the youth in the ovens or the miserliness of the owners who would have changed the recipe.

Having uncovered all these inconveniences, but let’s admit that things are worse in the Donbass at the moment, far from wanting to blame these young people who have taken over so many businesses in Quebec, or even the merchants.

But still.

Everyone now understands what demographers have been repeating for years because we are feeling the effects so close to us now. There is an extremely serious labor crisis, a shortage, with no end in sight.

Of course, the governments of the past few decades should have looked outside the box. But since the consequences were not immediate, we left the package to the next one and so on. Rolling Stone…

It’s not just indifference on the part of our governments, it would be unfair to assume that. Measures have been taken, such as the major investment by the Quebec government in training in strategic occupations, announced a few months ago. Just like last week’s CAQ report on vocational training.

But if you read the programs of the other parties, apart from the well-known proposals on pensioners, we have so far been bogged down in the big policy statements that aren’t worth much money. Overall, what is on the table will not be enough.

Why don’t we feel a national emergency when we know we’re up to our necks in molasses?

Why don’t we explain that there will be so many labor shortages in the coming decades and that we have a comprehensive, clear plan that will fill those needs in key areas of activity with so many new workers, thanks to the sum of such solutions? A hole, a pin.

At the moment, one hears too many vague statements from governments. As, for example, it will be necessary to allow more people with disabilities access to the labor market. We’re sorry ? are we really there We shall soon be convinced that prisoners are being forced to work in foot chains, as was the case in the past and perhaps still is in the southern United States.

And we might think that soon we’ll invent a robot to go and torch into CHSLDs, where I’ll eventually become a client. Note that a robot would not catch COVID-19, a sure win.

Or that restaurants become canteens without service.

And then there is this extremely sensitive issue of immigration. Usually expressed as immigration thresholds. In Quebec we want to control this immigration, I understand that. But the immigrant admissions organization looks unbalanced and too often heartless.

And there are these other people who run their businesses, their wealth-creating businesses, for which we have created an incredible obstacle course to welcome new workers. We sense a great deal of discouragement among traders and entrepreneurs.

We shouldn’t be surprised if the latter are staring at Mexico to settle there. Net losses on the horizon.

And finally…if there’s anything Quebecers deserve from all political parties during this election campaign, it’s a detailed vision of how much, when and how this labor crisis will be resolved.

Go on ! Are we going crazy? we are capable

Between us

For the pizza I looked for a new fully dressed pusher.

A Kurdish immigrant from rue Racine in the Loretteville neighborhood of Quebec who gets high to serve us well.

In addition to masturbation, I have the impression of being useful and contributing to the integration of a person who deserves it.

The patient, who arrived in Hong Kong on Monday, was taken to hospital after saying he was unwell, said one of those officials, Edwin Tsui.

He had no contact with the local population and was classified as an imported case, he added, assuring that the risk of seeing Hong Kong residents infected was “very low”.

Travelers arriving in Hong Kong must undergo a three-day quarantine in a hotel as part of the “zero covid” strategy to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

The monkeypox patient was in the United States for most of August before spending a week in Canada and then traveling to the Philippines before arriving in Hong Kong.

According to health officials, in the week leading up to his admission, he presented with symptoms including rashes, swollen lymph nodes and a sore throat.

Hong Kong will raise its monkeypox alert level and report the case to the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as mainland China, officials said.

Klyuchevskaya Sopka Survivors evacuated after deadly attempt to climb Russias

Klyuchevskaya Sopka: Survivors evacuated after deadly attempt to climb Russia’s volcano

The deceased were among a group of 12 people, including two leaders, who have been living since April 30. A rescue party began climbing on Monday to reach the survivors, Russia’s Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief told state media.

At 4,750 meters (15,580 feet), Klyuchevskaya Sopka is one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that the survivors were transported by helicopter to the nearest village of Klyuchi in the Ust-Kamchatka District on Tuesday morning. RIA Novosti noted that one of the survivors had suffered frostbite when rescuers reached them.

According to local media, the survivors will eventually be evacuated to Petropavlovsk on a plane from the Regional Center for Disaster Medicine.

Izvestiya, one of Russia’s main daily newspapers, reported that part of the rescue team remained on the volcano after the survivors were evacuated. The remaining rescuers will decide how to evacuate the bodies at an altitude of 4,158 meters (13,641 feet) after the weather forecast is known.

Conditions on the volcano are treacherous and unpredictable, with strong winds, bitterly cold temperatures and snow at high altitudes.

Previous search and rescue attempts to reach those trapped were unsuccessful as strong winds prevented a helicopter from landing on the volcano on Sunday, a day after five members of the group fell to their deaths. As of Monday morning, three more had died, Russian Deputy Prime Minister of Kamchatka Roman Vasilevsky told RIA Novosti.

The minister for emergency situations in the region where the volcano is located has set up an information hotline for members of the climbing group, a spokesman told RIA Novosti.

“Relatives can find out about the course of the search and rescue operations and, if necessary, receive psychological help,” said the press service of the ministry.

A criminal case has been launched to investigate the cause of death, RIA Novosti reported.

Nigeria: Hundreds of jihadists drown while fleeing military offensive

A hundred jihadist fighters drowned in a river in northeastern Nigeria while trying to flee a military offensive, security sources and local residents told AFP on September 5, 2022. According to these sources, the Nigerian military launched a ground and air offensive last week to push the jihadists out of several villages along the Yezaram River. Overwhelmed, the fighters then threw themselves into the river in hopes of escaping, but many drowned.

The Yezaram River is located in the state of Borno, near the Sambisa forest, the main hideout of Boko Haram and the Islamic State group in West Africa (Iswap). On Thursday, September 1, and Friday, September 2, “more than 100 terrorists were killed, most of them by drowning, trying to cross the turbulent river,” a senior military officer said. “Our soldiers pulverized the terrorists with air and ground strikes and forced them to abandon their positions,” added the officer on condition of anonymity, who said four Nigerian soldiers died during the offensive. The soldiers, supported by Super Tucano planes and Alpha jets, conducted “clearance operations in the villages of Busuwwa, Malum Fatari, Dagangari, Galtawa and Baram Kamaa,” said Bukar Grema, a member of an “anti-jihadist” militia.

“The majority of Boko Haram fighters drowned in the river and their bloated bodies were found floating on the surface on Saturday. More than 100 of them were picked up and buried by our men.”

Two local residents confirmed the statements of the militiaman. Most of the bodies were found in Busuwwa, 15 km from Sambisa Forest, said Bunu Ibrahim, a resident.

Nigerian Defense Minister Bashir Salihi Magashi told reporters on Monday (September 5) that there had been massive ground and air operations against jihadists over the past week, but did not give an exact number. He did not mention these drownings during his press conference (link in English) with the Home Secretary.

“The goal (…) of total defeat of the terrorists in the Northeast has already been achieved. The synchronized ground and air operations continued to inflict huge casualties on the terrorists, forcing many of them, including commanders and infantry, to surrender en masse, along with their families.”

According to the defense minister, 3,407 Boko Haram terrorists, including their family members, surrendered within a month. The conflict, which began 13 years ago in north-eastern Nigeria between the authorities and jihadists, has claimed the lives of 40,000 people and forced two million others to flee, according to the United Nations.
