Lady Gaga calls on Republicans to back away from gay marriage in fiery speech – Pride.com

Lady Gaga’s Chromatica tour hit Washington DC last night, and as an ally, she didn’t miss an opportunity to speak out in favor of same-sex marriage and abortion rights – calling out Republicans for their attacks on both.

Throughout her performance, Gaga made powerful references to the political struggles close to her heart.

During “Born This Way,” a popular gay anthem, Gaga spoke to the queer crowd in the crowd. “I see a lot of people in this audience who know exactly who you are,” she said. She then moved on to the issue of marriage equality, saying that US legislators “did better not mess with gay marriage in this country.”

Gay marriage has been legal in the US since 2015 following the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges legal. While that appeared to be established law when the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas made it clear that marriage equality was also on the chopping block.

Gaga also offered the crowd messages of support and compassion. “In the past few years, this country has been very brave and shown a lot of courage, and there’s been a lot of pain,” she said during a performance of Always Remember Us This Way. “We wish we could go back and change what happened, but I want to remember your courage.

“I think the world is pretty special, even though it sucks too.”

Finally, Gaga spoke about the Roe v. Rollback in a fiery speech. Wade and dedicated “Edge of Glory” to “every woman in America who now has to worry about her body if she becomes pregnant.”

At that moment she called for solidarity. “I pray that this country will speak up… that we will stick together and not stop until it’s right.”
