GALAXY 1, SOUNDER 0: Chicharito Hernandez put the Galaxy on the board in the 10th minute, collecting a pass in the box and easily shoving it past Stefan Frei. It is the seventh time in ten games that the Sounders have conceded the first goal.
POSITIONS: The Sounders have returned to a back three for the first time since July 13, but will use a 3-5-2 for the first time this year. The move was necessitated somewhat by an injury to Cristian Roldan, who was effectively replaced by Kelyn Rowe in the line-up.
There are still nine games left in the 2022 regular season. The Seattle Sounders are 10th in the Western Conference but just a point off a playoff spot and can jump to sixth with a win over the LA Galaxy tonight. It’s been a vaguely familiar story for a few weeks and likely will remain so for the next few years.
This Galaxy game has an added meaning as they are one of the teams the Sounders will be battling for those final playoff spots. Like the Sounders, the Galaxy have struggled in recent weeks (although they managed to pull off a resounding win over the Whitecaps). The Galaxy are 2-5-0 over their last 7 and 3-6-1 over their last 10. That’s a point higher than the Sounders over their last 10.
The Galaxy’s biggest problem has been on defense, where they’ve given up 19 goals in that 10-game streak. They also scored at least two goals in half of those games and gave up at least three out of four of them.
Their struggles have almost mirrored the Sounders, who have only allowed three goals once in that 10-game streak but been limited to just nine goals scored.
- The Sounders have a nine-game unbeaten run against the Galaxy (5-0-3) that dates back to 2018 and includes a 3-2 win earlier this year. The Sounders went 2-0-3 on the road during that stretch.
- That ties almost perfectly with Raúl Ruidíaz’s stint with the Sounders, which includes eight goals in eight career games against the Galaxy.
- The Galaxy clinched a 5-2 win over the Whitecaps on Saturday. It included the first half with four goals since 2016.
- The Galaxy substitutes have scored 24 goals this year (10 goals, 14 assists), with Dejan Jovelic leading the way (6 goals, 3 assists).
