San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined the I Am Athlete podcast and was asked about the process that led to the team picking quarterback Trey Lance with the No. 3 draft pick last year. There was much speculation as to who the 49ers were planning to draft after trading from No. 12. Many thought Shanahan was targeting quarterback Mac Jones, while many fans scoffed at the idea.

Jones was a target – along with Lance.

“We made the trade so early that I felt good because I knew before we made it,” Shanahan said, “and how good we were going to be [one] at 12. There were two I really wanted.

Shanahan was asked to name the second quarterback.

“Mac,” the 49ers coach replied. “Yes, Mac Jones and Trey. Those were the two guys we were attached to from the start and if we never moved up [No. 3], we would never have had the opportunity to learn more about Trey. That was the hardest part. You have to be so sneaky and stuff when you’re back there because you don’t want people jumping in front of you and I had a very strong feeling that people would jump in front of us.

“So going through that process of getting to know them both – Trey was tough because he didn’t play football the year before and it was a small school. So we learned so much about her from knowing each other and being there because we didn’t have anything to hide, and that made me feel a lot more confident.”

Shanahan added that he can’t say exactly when the decision shifted to Lance, but the manager obviously got to the point where he felt good about choosing him over Jones.

“Mac had so much good stuff on tape the way he was playing,” Shanahan said. “And Trey, I loved what he put on tape. It was a football year, so it wasn’t quite enough, and especially the division. But the more you delve into it, the more I got to know the guy. The more I had to find out some stuff about him, the more I believed in what I didn’t see and what I think we’re going to see.” Nobody is perfect Found an error in this article?

49ers’ Kyle Shanahan explains how Trey Lance differs from other QBs he’s coached

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sat down with NFL Network’s Steve Mariucci and Michael Yam ahead of Tuesday’s practice session. Mariucci, a former 49ers head coach, asked Shanahan about his new starting quarterback, Trey Lance. Shanahan has worked with several quarterbacks in the past — like Atlanta’s pocket passer Matt Ryan and Washington’s dynamic Robert Griffin III. Mariucci asked Shanahan where Lance fits in when he compares the 22-year-old passerby to these different types of guys. “That’s why I enjoyed seeing him in college so much, because you could see both [skill sets]’ Shanahan replied. “It was at a much lower level, and it was only football for a year, so you didn’t have much to do, but you saw the offense that they have

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers Playbook Doesn’t Change for Trey Lance; Jauan Jennings is difficult to cover

Some expect the San Francisco 49ers offense to continue to develop with sophomore quarterback Trey Lance at the helm. While that’s probably true, it’s not intentional. There will be no drastic change to the playbook. Instead, Lance can lengthen plays and potentially bring the football further down for some explosive plays. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters ahead of Saturday’s practice and was asked about the playbook. Is he considering changing it up to capitalize on Lance’s unique athleticism? “Not at all,” Shanahan replied. “I mean, you do the same stuff, and you just have a few more elements. Having the threat of a running quarterback can change the defense. And when you see how that changes her, then you adapt

Kyle Shanahan plans to face Trey Lance in two 49ers preseason games, ‘very happy’ with QB

The San Francisco 49ers are playing three preseason games in a fortnight. Speaking to reporters ahead of Tuesday’s practice session, head coach Kyle Shanahan laid out his plan to ensure the starters get some exhibition reps without tiring. For sophomore quarterback Trey Lance, that means playing in just two preseason games. “We have a pretty good idea [for the preseason plan]’ Shanahan said. “I definitely want to see how these practices go over the first two days. I would love to get guys to play in this game mainly because I don’t want them to play in the second game. “On Friday, the 49ers will host the Green Bay Packers at Levi’s Stadium. Then, eight days later, they will play the Minnesota Vikings away, San Francisco will train with the Vikings

After Thursday’s 49ers practice session, quarterback Trey Lance spoke publicly for the first time since June, while defense coordinator DeMeco Ryans chatted with reporters about what he’s seen so far from his side of the ball — and the quarterback versus his defense.
