“I sided with my mother and tortured my father for years. When he came back I made it as difficult as possible for him,” Kyle admitted.

“I was really sad that he was and how hard he tried to make things right. I really enjoyed seeing him suffer because I felt like he had to suffer like we did.”

Breaking down and fighting back tears, Kyle continued, “When he got cancer and died, I regretted not having been more open with him.

“I regretted it and thought what a waste of time it was. Now that he’s gone we can’t talk, he can’t say anything.’

“I regret it and my brother regrets it,” he continued, adding that he only spoke to his sibling about his father three days ago.

“What a waste of time and we could have had her with him. You never get over it, you keep torturing yourself and regretting your actions,” an emotional Kyle admitted.

Kyle’s father, Peter Sandilands, died in 2016 after a battle with liver and colon cancer.

Back then, Kyle told his radio listeners that he and his father made amends towards the end.

Trying his best to hold back emotions, he said: “We ended up having a great relationship there.”

“But it’s the regret of about 10 years somewhere in the middle where it was a bit forced. He tried to get us back and I acted like it was ok but it was just messy.

He explained that his mother and stepfather kicked him out, and when his father also turned him down after he showed up to his house, he lived on the streets for “a little less than a year”.

‘They said they looked [for me]um, but they couldn’t have looked too far because I really still lived in the same suburbs we grew up in,” he said.

“I felt like I couldn’t do it [go home]. They said go away, you are not welcome here.’

“I have a great relationship with them now, although that cloud still comes up, so it was never fully discussed. Nobody ever cried. Nobody ever apologized.”

Kyle’s father, a part-time bus driver in Brisbane, denied Kyle’s claims when speaking to the Daily Telegraph in 2009.

“He always had a home, but he didn’t get along with his stepfather and his behavior got worse and worse then,” he said.
