Kirby Smart updates Arik Gilbert’s status with the Georgia football team

ATHENS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Arik Gilbert trained with the team this week, but he didn’t say he would be traveling with the team this week.

The No. 1 Bulldogs play Columbia, Missouri Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

“AG has been practicing with us and will be doing it day by day and hopefully helping us this year,” Smart said on Wednesday’s SEC trainer teleconference.

Smart also described Gilbert’s status ahead of last Saturday’s Kent State game as “day to day throughout the week.” Gilbert got dressed but didn’t play.

Gilbert, who joined Georgia after the 2020 season from LSU, has played in two games this season and taken 23 snaps on offense and

Georgia mostly keeps training sessions closed, so members of the media are not allowed to see and determine which players are training and/or to what extent.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. recently ranked Gilbert as the No. 1 player at H-back in the upcoming NFL draft.

Smart has not clarified the status of defense attorney Javon Bullard, who was charged with a DUI early Sunday morning, saying it would be handled internally.

Bullard is not expected to travel or play based on previous UGA disciplinary guidelines.

Smart said preseason All-SEC defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who was handicapped by an ankle injury, gets more work in practice and rotates in the line to get more work.

Receiver Ladd McConkey is also getting more work this week after being restricted in drills last week, according to Smart.

“It’s a volume problem, not really an injury he’s picked up, he’s got a toe problem,” said Smart. “He was much better this week. We turned it off for two days last week.”

Smart said defenseman Tykee Smith and linebacker Xavian Sorey, both of whom didn’t play defensive snaps against Kent State, are “fine.”

Sorey played six special teams snaps while Smith didn’t play in the 39-22 win over the Golden Flashes.
